Student answer (Band 6.0)

Rapid urbanization increases housing shortages in major cities, some people believe that the situation could be tackled by building high-rise apartments by which small lands are used in effective way. I partially agree with the given statement, because it also has some drawbacks that I will be mentioned in the below paragraphs.

First and foremost reason is that nowadays, many people prefer living in big cities which lead to shortage of houses in large cities but by building high-rise apartments government can tackle with the problem, as this is the efficient way to deal with limited land space. Secondly, if individuals live in tall apartments it will give them chance to create a strong bond with their neighbors. Furthermore, these types of residential areas are often located near to people destination as they easily commute to offices, hospitals and schools which can lead less congestion on the roads. For instance, building high-rise residentials are often cheaper than the urban homes.

Moreover, there are some drawbacks of building tall blocks as sometime its difficult to evacuate the whole building during natural disaster and time consuming. Along with this, when people live in high- rise blocks experience lack of privacy and overcrowding which i think a major disadvantage of tower buildings. In addition, sharing facilities like lifts, parking spaces and corridors can become congested and make their daily lives less convenient.

To conclusion, although high-rise apartment buildings can help address housing shortages but it also provide negative impact on residents lives such as hit their privacy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the benefits and drawbacks of high-rise apartments, maintaining a clear position of partial agreement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'creating a strong bond with neighbors' in high-rise buildings is counter-intuitive and lacks supporting evidence, as high-density living is often associated with social isolation. Similarly, the claim that these buildings are 'cheaper' is stated without explanation. To reach a higher band, you need to provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples to support your arguments, rather than listing several points briefly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' to link your points. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'by which small lands are used in effective way'. Additionally, some transitions feel mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always clear and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'large cities' and 'high-rise apartments'. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'people destination' instead of 'people's destinations' and 'hit their privacy' instead of 'impinge upon their privacy'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and housing, and pay closer attention to the correct usage of nouns and verbs in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'some people believe that the situation could be tackled... by which small lands are used in effective way' (awkward relative clause), 'lead less congestion' (missing 'to'), and 'sometime its difficult' (missing subject and incorrect tense). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing articles or auxiliary verbs.
