Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people may disagree that construction of high rise buildings has had a positive impact, in providing accommodation in metropolitan cities. I on the other hand believe that tall buildings can be beneficial.

The population of the world is on the rise. People in search for better job opportunities have started to migrate to large cities to work under multinational companies. For a better standard of living. This increase has led people in finding accommodation difficult. Constructing tall apartments can help to accommodate a large number of residents in a single building. For example, the architecture of New York's apartments demonstrates how they cater to the large population of the metropolitan city.

Generally, large buildings include offices on their 1st floors or at the top. This inclusion can improve the maintenance of the buildings and also help in commute of the residents. It can not only provide convenience for the people occupying the apartments but also people living nearby these buildings can easily access their offices. For instance, the infamous Burj Khalifa, known for being the tallest building of the world not only is home to a lot of its residents but also has multiple floors dedicated to offices and workspace.

In conclusion, I believe that high rise buildings not only improve the living conditions by providing more housing but also provide convenience to the people living their and around it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of high-rise buildings. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding population density and mixed-use buildings are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The example of the Burj Khalifa is a good start, but the explanation of how it specifically solves housing shortages in large cities could be more detailed. To reach a higher band, you must expand your supporting points and ensure you meet the minimum word count to allow for a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For example,' 'Generally,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the sentence 'For a better standard of living' is a fragment that disrupts the flow of the second paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'metropolitan,' 'multinational,' and 'accommodation.' However, there are some minor collocation errors, such as 'help in commute of the residents' (should be 'help with the residents' commute') and 'people living their' (should be 'there'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; using more precise academic synonyms would elevate the quality of the writing. Focus on learning collocations to sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Some people may disagree that construction... has had' (missing article 'the') and 'people in search for' (should be 'in search of'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the double space after 'For example,' and minor errors in preposition usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable.
