Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often suggested that constructing high rise apartments building is best solution for home shortage in metropolitan cities. I completely agree with this view, because increasing land price and efficient use of land.

There are strong arguments in favour of this approach. Firstly, in todays time price of land is increasing as inflation is rising in addition most people could not afford costly land and other reason is cities have limited land so it is best if we use it in an efficient way by staking multiple floors. For example, cities like Hong kong and Tokyo are living examples, they constructed cities in this way.

However, tall apartment blocks are not without drawbacks. reason high-rise living can affect quality of people's life like social isolation and a lack of community compared to low-rise neighborhood For instance, some studies have linked high-density housing with increased mental health issues, particularly for families with children who lack easy access to outdoor space. Furthermore, building and maintaining very tall structures is costly, and this expense doesn't always translate into affordable housing, since much of the new supply can be luxury apartments beyond the reach of low-income residents and also has high risk in case of hazard like fire and earthquake .

In conclusion, while tall apartment blocks can efficiently address land shortages in large cities, I believe it as best way but has its drawbacks. for example, that other solutions such as affordable housing policy, better public transport enabling suburban living, etc. should also be considered alongside high-rise construction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the arguments for high-rise buildings are clear, the counter-arguments are presented in a way that contradicts the initial 'complete agreement' stance. The conclusion introduces new ideas, such as 'affordable housing policy' and 'public transport,' which were not previously discussed, making the argument feel slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, ensure that the position remains consistent and that all supporting points are fully explored within the body paragraphs rather than being introduced at the very end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or missing, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the initial agreement and the suggested alternative solutions is not fully bridged. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, covering the topic of urban planning effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'metropolitan,' 'high-density,' and 'hazard.' However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'staking multiple floors' (likely meaning 'stacking') and 'in todays time' (should be 'in today's world'). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the lack of precision and occasional awkward phrasing limits the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('price of land,' 'best solution'), punctuation issues, and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'high-rise living can affect quality of people's life'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic articles and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
