Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some believe that providing sufficient amount of homes within cities is to build skyscraper apartment blocks. I completely agree that building in this manor could possibly lead to benefits within the communities such as cheaper monthly rent and space saving techniques.

The main reason I agree is because we live in a world where cities are getting filled up quicker with people than what the housing infrastructure can be build. By building tall commercial apartment blocks one could potentially start to catch up with the increasing numbers of people within the cities. For example, a city that has a housing crises could implement a funding for the construction of skyscrapers to be used as apartments to counter the housing crisis this could result in better living conditions for people in the city and could potentially lead to better space saving in cities.

Another reason that I agree with this solution is because by building these types of living structures, rent would not be so expensive within cities. By building tall apartment blocks where numerous people are paying rent each month could potentially lead to a decreased monthly rent for all staying within these buildings. For instance, renting a home where their are only a handful of people staying results in paying more for the rent each month compared to a huge apartment building where a bigger number of people stay and the result being that the annual rent is much lower.

While there might be some unwanted effects to tall apartment building. I still agree that for space saving techniques, and cheaper monthly rent it is worth it to seriously consider this way of building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas regarding housing shortages and economic benefits are relevant, though they are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the argument about rent being cheaper in large buildings is asserted but not fully explained with logical economic reasoning. The response would benefit from more specific examples or a more nuanced exploration of the counter-arguments (e.g., social isolation or infrastructure strain) to better demonstrate a balanced perspective. Overall, the ideas are presented clearly, but they remain at a somewhat superficial level, which limits the development of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'The main reason', 'Another reason', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, even if the arguments themselves are not extensively developed. The use of linking words is sufficient to maintain coherence throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'housing infrastructure' and 'commercial apartment blocks', but there are also instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'in this manor' (should be 'manner') and 'implement a funding' (should be 'implement funding'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, though the vocabulary remains somewhat basic and repetitive in its structure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'housing infrastructure can be build' (should be 'built'), 'housing crises' (should be 'crisis'), and 'where their are' (should be 'there are'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The control over punctuation and sentence structure is inconsistent, with some sentences feeling slightly awkward due to these recurring grammatical slips.
