Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different opinions whether tall buildings are best way to provide more accommodation in big cities. I agree to this because tall building has room to accommodate large number of people at once. In the course of this essay, I would give reasons for my choice.

Tall building have the capabilities to accommodate a good number of people at once. A typical skyscraper have about 40 to 70 flats or apartments at once due to its length. These numerous apartments can accommodate a good number of families in highly populated cities. Although one could say that such buildings are not affordable, i believe they government can intervene by engaging in building project for communities. By so doing, the rent will automatically reduce.

Another good reason would be how it gives room for more buildings. Short houses are not suitable when you are tackling population issue in large cities. It waste space which could have been used to build other houses. One could argue that small building are easy to escape from during fire outbreak, I believe providing the necessary tools such as fire extinguisher, axe and so on in each apartment floors and also installing smoke dictators inside the rooms will easily solve fire outbreaks in tall buildings. Also, the government can provide reliable emergency contact system such as call centers, and professional fire fighters to help keep the city save.

In conclusion, tall building provide more accommodation for highly populated cities and the government can go a long way to ensure that their community are save by providing safety measures that are needed in populated cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding space efficiency and government intervention are relevant. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about government intervention is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of how it would practically work. The essay would benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis of the trade-offs involved in high-rise living. While the position is clear, the supporting points remain at a somewhat superficial level, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition 'Another good reason would be' is a standard but basic way to link paragraphs. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to connect ideas more fluidly across the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. The student relies on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'good number of people' and 'big cities'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'smoke dictators' (intended: smoke detectors) and 'keep the city save' (intended: safe). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of more sophisticated or academic vocabulary limits the score. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and varied academic terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Tall building have', 'skyscraper have') and article usage (e.g., 'i believe they government'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. The student needs to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and verb forms, before attempting more complex structures to ensure that the majority of sentences are error-free.
