Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most appropriate way to meet the demand for housing in the populated cities is the construction of high-rise buildings. I completely agree with this because there is a continuous increase in the number of people, and they require places to live, and only the establishment of tall buildings can resolve this issue.

Firstly, the population of the world is growing rapidly, death rate is less than birth rate, therefore, there is a great requirement of apartments, to meet this necessity construction of high-rise structures is essential. In this way, large portion of land will not be consumed, but many families will be able to live in a single building. Furthermore, the large area is required to construct houses on the ground floor. In contrast, if many apartments build at small place, stacked above each other, than less area will consume. Consequently, there will be free place for reforestation and vegetation. For instance, a large region, which was used for cultivation in the past, is now being used for the construction of separate houses for the people. As a result, the land for agriculture is decreasing.

Secondly, the establishment of large structures is economical, because construction of many number of separate houses will require more expenditures. However, a tall building contains numerous residential apartments at minimum cost. Moreover, it will be beneficial for administration also, because there will be less burden on the economy of the country for construction of living spaces. For example, in the developed countries, the government prefers the establishment of tall buildings in the populated cities, because they are more budget-friendly.

In conclusion, due to the rising number of individuals in leading cities, housing requirements have increased. To provide all people with living spaces, it is crucial to construct high buildings. These buildings will be eco-friendly and provide more safe environment

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding land conservation and economic efficiency are relevant and logically extended. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph, where the focus on 'cost' and 'expenditure' could have been more nuanced. While the ideas are supported with general examples, they lack specific, concrete detail that would elevate the response to a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it introduces a new, slightly vague point about a 'safe environment' that was not previously discussed. Overall, the task is addressed well, but the depth of analysis remains at a mid-level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'if many apartments build at small place', where the subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage hinder the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion, though the internal cohesion within sentences could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'high-rise buildings', 'reforestation', and 'cultivation'. However, there are instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'many number of separate houses' instead of 'a large number of' or 'numerous separate houses'. Additionally, the phrase 'establishment of tall buildings' is repeated frequently, suggesting a limited range of synonyms. While the meaning is always clear, the lack of more precise or sophisticated lexical items keeps the score in the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('at small place' instead of 'in a small space'), pluralization, and verb forms ('if many apartments build' should be 'if many apartments are built'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely obscured, and the writer shows a reasonable command of basic sentence construction, which is characteristic of a Band 6 level.
