Student answer (Band 6.0)

The increasing number of people moving from rural areas to cities has created a serious need for more housing. Therefore, I agree wholeheartedly that building vertical apartment blocks is one of the most effective ways to provide enough homes in large cities. In addition, living in flats can encourage people to communicate with each other and share their thoughts and experiences.

On the one hand, living in apartments is beneficial for families, because people live close to each other. They can easily communicate with their neighbours and convey messages from door to door. Furthermore , residents can meet each other in common areas and enjoy spending time together. For example, people living in the same apartment building can arrange small gatherings at weekends, where they can exchange their ideas about their lives, jobs and businesses. This type of social interaction can make people feel less lonely and help them develop strong relationships with their neighbours.

On the other hand, Another major advantage of tall apartment buildings is that they can provide many facilities in one place. For example, modern apartment complexes can include shops, gyms, playgrounds, parking areas and other useful services for residents. As a result, people do not need to travel long distances to fulfil their daily needs. This is particularly helpful for families with children because they can use nearby recreational areas safely. Therefore, well-planned apartment buildings can not only provide more homes but also make urban life more convenient and comfortable.

In conclusion, I formly agree that tall apartment blocks are an effective way to provide sufficient housing in large cities. They not only save land and accommodate more people, but also give residents opportunities to communicate, share ideas and support one another

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments, such as the social benefits of apartment living and the convenience of integrated facilities. However, the development is somewhat limited; while you mention land-saving in the conclusion, this point is not explored in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all main ideas introduced in the introduction or conclusion are fully supported with specific examples or logical explanations within the body paragraphs. The ideas are relevant, but the depth of analysis could be increased to fully explore the implications of high-density living.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother, and some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is generally accurate throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vertical apartment blocks', 'integrated facilities', and 'recreational areas'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some choices are slightly repetitive. A few minor errors exist, such as 'formly' (firmly), but these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic words like 'people' or 'communicate'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you achieve a more sophisticated tone suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are occasional errors, such as the capitalization error in 'Another' within the third paragraph and the spelling error 'formly'. While you use some complex structures, the variety is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider range of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already established.
