Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. However, the essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 224 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments are presented in a very brief and repetitive manner. While the student attempts to provide reasons such as cost-efficiency and land preservation, these points lack sufficient depth and supporting evidence. The conclusion is also underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, the student must expand on their arguments with more detailed explanations and examples to meet the length requirement and fully explore the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the basic structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'Probing a head' (likely intended as 'Moving ahead') and 'To explicate it'. The logical progression between sentences is sometimes disjointed, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. While there is an attempt to use transition signals, they are not always used appropriately, which hinders the flow of the argument. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic phrasing such as 'build tall apartments' and 'build new homes' throughout the text. There are also several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'not require land also' and 'money consumption'. The student struggles to use more precise or academic vocabulary suitable for an IELTS task. To improve, the student should focus on learning synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and economics, and practice using them in context to avoid repetitive and simplistic language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentence structures. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('land areas which is use'), article usage, and verb forms ('buit' instead of 'build'). These errors are persistent and occasionally make the meaning difficult to follow. The student attempts some complex structures, but they are often faulty. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and reducing the frequency of errors that impede clarity.
