Student answer (Band 5.0)

The best medium to supply adequate shelters in big towns is to construct high buildings because it reduces accomodation issue in the cities and left over lands could be used for other businesses

I agree with this statement because it solves accomodation problem in the town.

To begin with, there is likelyhood of accomodation issue in the big cities because of the large number of companies and institutions we have in the most densely populated area in the town.

Over the years People tends to migrate to towns where there are better opportunities either for career growth or to meet ends need, whereby this increased the accomodation issue in the cities, which one of the ways to solve this issue is to erect a storey building, for instance cities like Lagos in the south West part of Nigeria where will have major companies and establishment built owned by Government or by private organisations, such as Banks,Hotel,Gas and fuel stations and higher institutions of learning.Diverse of workers and Students migrated from various parts of the country to work, study and live there because the cities is a lucrative town for business and it houses the international airport of Nigeria.

Additional, building a tall building will save cost for construction and reserve left over land for other purposes ,for example car park and mini gardens in the compound

Futhermore.Big Towns are place for tourism and for business growth, incase of business summit and conferences from any part of the world ,a bigger homes is needed to accommodate as many participants as possible, for such situations a tall building is required in other to use the left over space either for car parks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by agreeing that tall apartment blocks are the best solution for housing in large cities. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. While you mention land usage and economic growth, the arguments are not fully extended. For instance, the example of Lagos is relevant but becomes slightly tangential as it focuses more on the city's general features rather than specifically on how tall buildings solve the housing crisis. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point that directly links back to the central argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the structure is inconsistent. Some sentences are fragmented, and the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'Additional,' instead of 'Additionally,' and 'Futhermore.' The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between ideas is often abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There is significant repetition of words like 'accommodation,' 'issue,' and 'cities.' Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'meet ends need' (likely meaning 'make ends meet') and 'the best medium to supply adequate shelters.' There are also frequent spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' (repeatedly misspelled) and 'likelyhood.' To improve, focus on learning collocations and synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing and ensure accurate spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences often contain grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'People tends to migrate' and 'the cities is a lucrative town.' Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and periods, and the misuse of capital letters in the middle of sentences. These errors are frequent and occasionally impede the clarity of your message. You should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and correct punctuation, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
