Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, finding accommodation in major cities has become a global challenge . While some people believe that the most effective method is to provide accommodation for city dwellers by building large apartment blocks, I firmly disagree with this statement because it will lead to environmental pollution and possible natural disaster.

First of all, constructing large apartments often involves transporting elements such as sand, brick, stone, glass, and other raw materials. As a result, these materials significantly affect the environment by polluting air ,water and soil. Moreover, enough spaces are difficult to find in major cities, motivating people to deforesting the green area for providing accommodation facilities. Instead of building large tall buildings, government could emphasize decentralization which will demotivate rural to city migration. For example, the government of Bangladesh has passed a policy to build houses outside of the major cities which not only reducing the pollution in city but also eliminating city congestion.

Furthermore, large tall buildings have life threatening risk - natural disaster like earthquake or pandemic like COVID-19. Housing projects are constructed in a larger scale in which buildings are tall where hundreds of households live together. Disasters like earthquakes will bring catastrophic results. Thereby, building tall buildings is not a long term solution. Additionally, during COVID-19, residents have witnessed how the disease was spread rapidly. Thus, having considered these challenges constructing large tall building in major cities for providing accommodation facilities is not a permanent solution.

In conclusion, although large apartment buildings would provide accommodation facilities for several city people, I strongly disagree with this method, as it may bring life threathening challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on environmental concerns and safety risks like earthquakes and pandemics. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding COVID-19 is mentioned but not fully explained in terms of how tall buildings specifically exacerbate the spread compared to other housing types. The suggestion of decentralization is a strong point, but the essay could benefit from more nuanced exploration of the counter-argument (the necessity of high-density housing in growing cities) to achieve a higher band. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the environmental impact and the decentralization policy could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is generally accurate, though occasionally a bit mechanical. Overall, the structure supports the reader's understanding well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'accommodation', 'decentralization', 'congestion', and 'catastrophic'. However, there are some awkward collocations and minor errors, such as 'deforesting the green area' (should be 'clearing green spaces') and 'life threatening risk' (should be 'life-threatening risks'). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but there is a lack of more sophisticated or idiomatic language that would be required for a higher band. Spelling is mostly accurate, with only a few slips like 'threathening'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'government could emphasize' (missing article 'the'), 'not only reducing' (should be 'not only reduces'), and 'several city people' (unnatural phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some inconsistent spaces before periods. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and parallel structures in complex sentences.
