Student answer (Band 6.0)

Housing in large cities has become a hot topic of debate. It s difficult to allocate house to each family in city. So a better and more practical approach is to build tall apartment blocks and I agree with this solution.

Apartment blocks have many benefits like less space and more people accommodated as these blocks are really tall. Another reason is that these apartments are cheaper than an average house which can accommodate only one family. For example, a house built in one kanal holds one family while a 10 story block in same area can have space for more than twenty families in one block with two families in each story.

Apartment blocks also have one more benefit that they are easy to maintain due to their less space and no backyard. Playground and park are often managed by management. Security guards are also available in any case of emergency. People living in same apartment usually become close friends and are available to help each other. Women can spend their free time with their neighbors. Most uncommon opinion is that these apartments save a lot of trees. As a lot of land is saved from deforestation because they need less space than housing societies.

Tall apartment blocks have more benefits than their drawbacks like loss of natural beauty not being able to see clear sky. But as they are more cost effective and better for our environment. Ultimately I would definitely choose apartment over a house. I have spent a quality time living in an apartment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The response addresses the prompt by discussing the benefits of tall apartment blocks, such as space efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental preservation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about social interaction is a bit anecdotal and could be better linked to the broader concept of urban planning. To achieve a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more sophisticated reasoning rather than relying on simple examples like the 'one kanal' comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific theme. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Another reason is' and 'Ultimately', to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition to the paragraph about maintenance and social benefits could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is sometimes repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'urban planning' (implied), 'deforestation', and 'cost-effective'. However, there is a reliance on basic vocabulary, such as 'good', 'easy', and 'benefits'. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise and academic collocations. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'allocate house' instead of 'allocate housing' and 'in any case of emergency' which is slightly unnatural. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in city', 'in same area') and issues with pluralization ('less space' used repeatedly where 'limited space' or 'smaller footprint' would be better). Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack proper punctuation. To reach a higher band, focus on mastering article usage and subject-verb agreement. Additionally, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, while ensuring they remain error-free.
