Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that construction of tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough housing in large cities. I totally agree with this view. From my prospective, apartment blocks saves area as well as money of the people who are trying to live in big cities.

To begin with, I believe less area consumption is the most significant advantage of high apartment blocks. As a tall apartment building can easily carry 40 to 50 blocks, it requires less area for building homes as compared to 40 to 50 separate houses. For example, the small houses in the village occupy relatively more space as compared to an apartment in a city which could fit same number of people.

In addition to this, I also think apartment are more affordable as compared to the houses in large cities. The value of the lands in major cities are always relatively higher as compared to less modernized areas in the country which can be way out of budget for some families to afford. That is not the case for apartment houses as you do not require to purchase any land and can just focus on the type of house that you want rather than the area and the price. For instance, if a person's budget is $100,000, he can spend all his money on a good apartment block rather than spend more than half of it to but the land.

Ultimately, building of tall apartment houses is one of the best way to provide enough housing in large cities as it require less area for construction. Beside, apartment homes are far more affordable as compared to normal houses. Therefore, I fully agree with this idea of modernization.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding space efficiency and affordability are relevant and logically developed. However, the essay tends to over-generalize; for instance, the claim that apartment living is always more affordable is a broad assumption that lacks nuance regarding maintenance fees or location-specific costs. While the ideas are supported, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the conclusion, which restates the introduction without adding new insight. To reach a higher band, you should explore counter-arguments or provide more specific, real-world examples beyond hypothetical scenarios like the $100,000 budget example.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'Ultimately' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical. There are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'Beside, apartment homes' in the final paragraph is grammatically awkward and acts as a weak transition. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the progression of ideas could be smoother if the sentences were linked with more varied conjunctions rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'modernized' and 'consumption', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'carry 40 to 50 blocks' (referring to units) and 'apartment houses' (a slightly unnatural collocation). Spelling is generally accurate, but the word choice lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to urban planning and housing economics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('apartment blocks saves area', 'value of the lands... are', 'it require less area') and article usage errors ('the construction', 'the money'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure lacks the flexibility and error-free control expected at higher levels. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and pluralization would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
