Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, with rising population the most efficient way to provide shelters to people in larger cities is through construction of tall apartment buildings. I completely agree with the statement because building tall houses provide greater accomodation to individuals and is cost effective.

To begin with, in large cities where the population is more and the area to allocate houses is less, construction of tall building block becomes essential. Numerous families can be accomodated at one building leading to better structural planning. For example, with the growing population, countries such as Australia and Mexico have planned to construct dozens of skyscaper which will eventually aid significant number of people to live in a small area.

Furthermore, building tall apartment blocks is the cost-effective method for any country because it saves resources and expenses of the authorities. People will tend to spend less on building their own individual houses. On the other hand, the government will also save its resources by not building single story shelters. As a result, it will be beneficial for the economy of the country at large. For instance, apartment blocks have common amenities for every house such as, gymnasium, park, play area for infants, common club house. These amenities save a significant amount of money for those who plan to build all of them in their individual houses.

To conclude, construction of tall apartments by creating societies is beneficial in today's time as it can accomodate large number of people and is a boon to the economy. Hence, with the growing population, individuals can enjoy better standerd of living and also by saving on expenses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding space efficiency and cost-effectiveness are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Australia and Mexico and the inclusion of shared amenities. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. While the position is clear, the analysis could be deepened by exploring potential counter-arguments or more nuanced socio-economic impacts to reach a higher band. The response covers all parts of the task well, but the supporting evidence remains slightly generic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the overall sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some attempts at less common items, such as 'structural planning' and 'amenities'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'skyscaper' (skyscrapers), and 'standerd' (standard). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on using a wider range of precise collocations and ensuring accuracy in spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in one building' instead of 'in a single building') and subject-verb agreement issues ('building tall houses provide' instead of 'provides'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be refined for better flow. The control of grammar is sufficient for a band 6, but more consistent accuracy in complex structures is needed for a higher score.
