Student answer (Band 6.0)

Huge cities can provide supplemental homes to citizens by using long residential building blocks, which is a better way. I agree with this outlook because apartments can be less expensive for working people, whereas the extra space can be used for other needs.

On one side, most of the people have marginal sources of income, so they cannot afford expensive houses. Here, apartments are the best solution, as they can provide more living area within the required budget. It can also make it easy for people to stay connected with each other. They can also get their daily needs from the nearby area, which makes it so convenient. It can subsequently assist in population adjustment in large living areas. For example, in China, Beijing has 10,000 apartments that can accommodate 100,000 citizens with every necessity of life. This ultimately solved one of the huge problems due to population expansion.

Furthermore, if populations are adjusted in a limited area, it can provide more space to fulfill other demands such as parks, hospitals, schools, plantations, and agriculture. Food is one of the supplementary needs for living beings, which can only be solved by more crops and agriculture. For instance, in Tokyo, Japan, due to dense population, they have made skyrocketing buildings for working people while using excessive land for the generation of food for their own citizens. This has resolved the increasing demand for food with limited surface area.

In conclusion, large cities can also be more livable if they have more surface to adjust to the number of people. This is possible due to cost-cutting apartments that can provide to more people, and more benefit can be generated with extra space.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating an agreement with the proposition of building tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on affordability and land-use efficiency. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the point about affordability is clear, the argument regarding 'population adjustment' and 'plantations' is slightly underdeveloped and relies on some generalizations. The examples provided, such as Beijing and Tokyo, are relevant and support the main arguments well. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-explained idea that directly links back to the central thesis of urban housing solutions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On one side', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from discussing apartment affordability to 'population adjustment' in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of your position.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'supplemental', 'marginal', and 'skyrocketing'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'long residential building blocks' instead of 'high-rise apartment blocks' and 'population adjustment' where 'urban density' or 'housing capacity' would be more precise. While these choices do not impede communication, they limit the sophistication of your writing. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to urban planning and housing to express your ideas with greater precision and academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'provide to more people' and 'due to dense population, they have made skyrocketing buildings', which are slightly awkward. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion. You show a good attempt at using complex structures, though the control over them is not yet fully consistent. Increasing your use of varied subordinating conjunctions and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help elevate your score in this criterion.
