Student answer (Band 6.0)

People lives in high rise buildings as a community in big cities rather than living in separate double story houses.

Large cities have several buildings including shopping malls, offices and apartments. people kept coming from villages to find better opportunities in the city but they struggle in finding good paying jobs, high grocery prices and good living area.

As cities are already filled up with so many high rise buildings, building more tall apartment blocks can make city more congested that can make sky looks harder to look at. Also high rise buildings will be difficult to stay in because of noise from other apartments and less personal space for elder people and children. moreover, apartments have less space for bigger families or families with late teenagers as every person at the home needs his own space with work desk, hobby corner or full size closet.

However, tall apartment blocks will not destroy nature as much as housing colonies could do. tall rise buildings with central parks and museums allow people to come out of their bed and have an air. a commercial area away from the apartments block allow people to hang out with their friends and families and explore new cafes or art gallery means people can actually join social clubs or activities in downtown as they have less space at home to do that.

In my opinion, tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough personal space for families in large cities rather than a double or single story house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the pros and cons of high-rise living. However, the position is inconsistent. The introduction and body paragraphs present arguments against tall buildings, citing congestion and lack of space, but the conclusion suddenly states that they are the 'best way' to provide space. This lack of a clear, sustained position throughout the essay limits the development of the argument. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat under-developed, and the transition between the negative aspects and the positive aspects is abrupt, making the overall argument feel disjointed rather than a cohesive evaluation of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the second and third paragraphs is jarring, as the writer shifts from criticising high-rise buildings to praising them without a clear linking structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'moreover' and 'however', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. For example, the use of 'however' does not effectively bridge the contradictory arguments presented. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive, which hinders the overall readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'buildings', 'space', and 'people'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'congested', 'housing colonies', and 'commercial area', these are used with limited sophistication. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'have an air' (likely meaning 'get some fresh air') and 'tall rise buildings', which slightly impact the naturalness of the expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('People lives', 'every person... needs his own space'), article usage ('make sky looks harder'), and awkward phrasing ('building more tall apartment blocks can make city more congested'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the lack of capitalisation at the start of sentences and missing commas in complex sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.
