Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 160 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack the necessary depth and supporting examples required for an academic essay. While you state your position, the discussion of the disadvantages is fragmented and lacks logical expansion. To improve, you must ensure each body paragraph provides a clear, well-supported argument with specific examples or evidence to fully address the prompt. The current length prevents a thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'The main reason', they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly. The transition between the advantages and disadvantages is abrupt, and the final paragraph is particularly difficult to follow due to fragmented sentences and unclear referencing. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'aparcities' (likely a misspelling of apartments or cities) and 'stairs unable to climb'. The range of vocabulary is limited, which restricts your ability to convey complex ideas precisely. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to urban planning and construction, while ensuring that your spelling and word formation are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'large cities are... resulting in shortage', and sentence fragments, particularly in the final paragraph where the structure breaks down completely. The range of sentence structures is limited, relying mostly on simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct punctuation and the use of articles, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
