Student answer (Band 6.5)

is becoming increasingly difficult in urban areas to provide sufficient housing because of the growing population. Some people believe that constructing tall apartment blocks is one of the best solutions. I completely agree with this approach.

One of the main reasons to support this argument is that multi-storey complexes make efficient use of limited land. Densely populated cities have limited and expensive land. By building multiple floors in an apartment complex, a lot of families can live within a small area of land. For example, densely populated cities such as Mumbai and Delhi have many people who come from rural areas for work. Apartment blocks would provide sufficient housing for them rather than individual houses.

Another advantage of multi-storey apartments is that they provide a lot of facilities to their residents. For instance, these developments have in-house grocery stores, gyms and recreational areas, which reduce people’s reliance on private vehicles for daily tasks. As a result, there may be less traffic congestion on roads and therefore lower carbon emissions. In addition, living in the same residential area gives people more opportunities to interact with their neighbours.

However, I think that conventional homes have their own benefits. They provide more space and privacy and are much more suitable for joint families. The government should focus more on providing facilities like healthcare and public transport rather than relying on one form of housing.

In conclusion, building high-rise apartment blocks is one of the best solutions for providing housing for a large number of citizens. But other forms of housing should also be available in major cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt and maintained a consistent position throughout. You provided relevant arguments regarding land efficiency and resident facilities, which are well-supported by examples like Mumbai and Delhi. However, the essay is slightly unbalanced; you dedicate a paragraph to the benefits of conventional homes, which slightly undermines your stated position of 'completely agreeing' with the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that counter-arguments are used to strengthen your main position rather than appearing to contradict it. Overall, the ideas are relevant and the response is well-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as land efficiency or resident facilities. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One of the main reasons,' 'For instance,' and 'In addition,' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the third paragraph (discussing conventional homes) and the conclusion is slightly abrupt. The flow is generally smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'densely populated,' 'efficient use of limited land,' and 'carbon emissions' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for an academic context, it lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items required for higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning, but the range is somewhat limited to standard, expected terminology. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of conditional-like structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'which reduce people’s reliance...') shows good control. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or inversion, to demonstrate greater flexibility. The current level of accuracy is strong, and the grammar does not hinder communication in any way.
