Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people suggest that houses in the big cities should be replaced with tall apartment blocks in order to meet the demand of enough homes. I agree with the statement completely if enough facilities are given to the residents.
Urbanization is changing the world at steady pace. This change also raises some concerns relating to the population size and housing for that population. Separate homes occupy more space and thus contribute to the congestion in big cities. In order to provide enough homes for the people, governments should start focusing on the idea of building tall apartment blocks. They can help fix this problem in several ways. For example, tall apartment buildings provide housing for a large number of people. If those people were to be given separate homes, this could cause the major spaces in the cities to be used up for housing purpose. The spaces freed up as a result of building apartment buildings should be used for parks and other recreational activities. This will contribute in physical and mental wellbeing of a society.
Another problem associated with separate housing projects is maintainance. It would require more resources and man power to maintain separate homes by daily basis. But, in tall apartment buildings, a small number of maintainance staff will be enough for a large number of residents. This will eventually reduce pollution as it is convenient to maintain the littering in one large building in contrast to several small houses.
In conclusion, I would stress on the points of congestion and pollution in big cities to move towards big apartment buildings rather than alloting separate houses. Those apartments should be maintained and given with different facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and fully developed position on building tall apartment blocks in large cities. The writer introduces relevant ideas regarding housing demand, space conservation, urban green spaces, and maintenance efficiency. For instance, the suggestion that freed-up land can be used for parks and recreational activities successfully extends the main argument and supports physical and mental wellbeing. While some points, such as pollution management, could have been expanded further, the overall position remains clear and consistent throughout the essay. The response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement at Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, beginning with an introduction of the writer's stance, followed by body paragraphs exploring space utilization and maintenance, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition phrases like 'For example' and 'In conclusion' guiding the reader smoothly. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical, particularly in the transition between ideas. Paragraph breaks are used appropriately, but overall cohesion could be more flexible to reach higher bands. This performance aligns comfortably with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or 7.0; a score of 6.5 reflects these minor mechanical tendencies.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'urbanization', 'congestion', 'recreational activities', and 'man power'. However, there are notable word-choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'maintainance' instead of 'maintenance', 'by daily basis' instead of 'on a daily basis', and 'alloting separate houses' instead of 'allocating individual houses'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. Because the vocabulary range is sufficient yet contains recurring mechanical and collocational flaws, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the writer's ability to construct conditional sentences ('If those people were to be given separate homes...') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and prepositional errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'at steady pace' (missing an article), 'contribute in physical' (incorrect preposition), and awkward phrasing like 'given with different facilities'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is rarely obscured, and communication flows smoothly. The command of grammar and sentence structures sits firmly at the Band 6 level.
