Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rapid growth of urban population has created a serious shortage of hosing in many large cities. I'm fully agree that high rise buildings is the most efficient solution of this problem. But tall building isn't the only solution.

The main advantage of the tall buildings is they can provide homes to a large numbers of people in the very small area of land. More people live in the high rise buildings then the vast occupied land homes. Land in major cities is often very expensive and people can't easily afford it. So, they use to buy their apartments in the high rise buildings because they are cheap. The building having several numbers of floors can accommodate hundreds of residents in the smaller area of plot. For example, instead of building 50 different houses on different area size plot, we can construct only one high rise apartments building which can accommodate large numbers of residents.

Another benefit is the high rise housing can control the expansion of the urban population with low rise housing societies. Number of housing schemes are constructed on the agriculture land which cause the pollution and climate change. Deforestation are increases day by day because of concreate expansion. High rise buildings are constructed in the cities which helps people to reaches offices and schools on time, which can control pollution as well.

In Conclusion, cloud touching buildings are more suitable in the urban life because it's cheap and control the urban expansion. Nevertheless, it should be combined with other housing options and proper urban planning to create comfortable and sustainable cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt effectively, presenting a clear position that tall apartment blocks are an efficient solution for urban housing shortages while acknowledging other complementary options. The main ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly regarding space efficiency and the curbing of urban sprawl. For instance, the writer notes that 'instead of building 50 different houses on different area size plot, we can construct only one high rise apartments building which can accommodate large numbers of residents.' However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise and some supporting ideas, such as the exact mechanisms of pollution control, are slightly repetitive and under-developed. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear overall stance, fitting the Band 7 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, advantages regarding space, environmental and urban sprawl benefits, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'The main advantage', 'Another benefit', and 'In Conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the slightly abrupt transition in the first paragraph ('I'm fully agree that high rise buildings is the most efficient solution of this problem. But tall building isn't the only solution.') and occasional awkward referencing like 'the high rise housing'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, placing the response solidly at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to urbanisation, such as 'urban population', 'expansion', 'agriculture land', 'deforestation', and 'sustainable cities'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, incorrect collocations, and grammatical forms of words, such as 'hosing' instead of housing, 'concreate' instead of concrete, and 'cloud touching buildings'. Additionally, phrases like 'vast occupied land homes' show limited precision. While these inaccuracies occasionally draw attention, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('which can accommodate large numbers of residents') and conditional-like constructions. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('high rise buildings is'), article omissions or misuse ('in the very small area', 'on the agriculture land'), incorrect prepositions ('on different area size plot'), and awkward phrasing ('people can't easily afford it. So, they use to buy...'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 5.5 score rounded to 6.0 based on the mix of structures.
