Student answer (Band 4.5)

The easiest way to provide shelter to the society in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks, which can give home to maximum of a large number of public. In my opinion, this thought is useful to some extent as building tall apartment blocks require a huge amount of construction material and workers to make it to the end. And the more society expands, the more the need of home rises. So, the number of labourers to fulfil this idea is very huge and the process is time consuming.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response only contains 90 words, falling severely short of the minimum 250-word requirement. This under-length severely limits the writer's ability to address all parts of the task fully or develop a position properly. While the student attempts to present an opinion ("in my opinion, this thought is useful to some extent"), the ideas are heavily restricted. Instead of focusing primarily on housing provision, the argument shifts towards construction materials and labour shortages. Because the response is underdeveloped and fails the length requirement, it aligns with the Band 4 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The text consists of a single block paragraph, entirely lacking the appropriate paragraphing structure expected for an essay response. Although basic cohesive devices are attempted, such as "And the more society expands" and "So, the number of labourers", the logical progression of ideas is weak. The transition from discussing housing needs to labour and construction materials is abrupt and lacks seamless connection. Referencing is basic, resulting in an overall arrangement that is difficult to follow and lacking cohesive control.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive throughout the short response. Phrases such as "provide shelter to the society" and "huge amount of construction material" lack precision and natural collocation. There is an awkward collocation in "give home to maximum of a large number of public". While the writer attempts words like "construction" and "labourers", the overall lexical range is very limited and repetitive, which strains the reader's comprehension and fits the Band 4 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple and over-extended complex sentences. There are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as "building tall apartment blocks require" (subject-verb agreement error, as 'building' is singular or requires a plural construction context) and "need of home rises" (article and pluralisation issues). Punctuation and sentence boundaries require better control. Due to the frequent errors and limited structural variety, a Band 5 is appropriate.
