IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an argument whether or not it's the best idea to build tall apartment blocks in large cities to provide enough homes. Although private houses can provide much more private areas and comfort, having tall apartment blocks has it's own advantages.

On the one hand, building and maintaining tall apartment blocks can be too costly. Evacuating these buildings in dangerous situations can be too difficult resulting in catastrophe and accidents. Eve though private homes can be individually expensive, it offers privacy and the own home comfort that can not be found in apartments. Many people might prefer homes instead of apartments. Apartments can sometimes disturb peace, or have too many complaints in case of small minor issues that are hard to fix, as different people might have different opinions about the block, making private homes a better option.

On the other hand, building tall apartment blocks saves a lot of space compares to hundreds of private homes. It provides great views for some people, and the luxury to not have to manage services themselves. Apartment costs can be significantly cheaper than private homes, providing a more efficient living cost. Services like gyms, medical stores, and food can be provided inside the block so no one has to go too far for what they need. Apartment blocks provide more space for other ideas like parks or different places that would otherwise be occupies by private homes. The problems of the apartment like water, or electricity problems, are handled by the block, allowing easier living for the customers. The quietness away from the roads and streets in apartment blocks is much preferred by people.

In my opinion, the best idea is to build apartment blocks, which is not only space saving, it is less costly for people in the long run, more preferred and gives a special kind of beauty to the city to compared to private homes. Although private homes can be more private, apartment blocks provide more socialization and comfort than private homes.

in conclusion, the best way to provide enough homes is to build tall apartment blocks, providing hundreds of apartments, services and an easy lifestyle taking up little space in the city.
