Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate addresses the prompt by clearly stating their position in agreement with the statement that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The response includes relevant main ideas, such as environmental benefits, land efficiency, and safety during disasters like tsunamis. However, the development of these ideas is frequently hindered by dense, unclear phrasing and non-standard examples, such as the claim about India and Nepal experiencing tsunamis. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments are limited and lack sophisticated extension due to language barriers. Therefore, this performance aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is structured into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, fulfilling the basic requirement of paragraphing. However, the organization suffers from a lack of clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repeatedly, such as 'TO EXPLICATE THAT' and 'SECOND PARAMOUNT BREASON', which often feel mechanical rather than natural. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transitions between sentences can be abrupt, making the logical flow difficult to follow in places. This corresponds closely to the Band 5 descriptors for cohesion and paragraphing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and heavily repetitive, featuring frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'NEOTERIC', 'ALLOTE', 'BENIFICIAL', 'HOSES', and 'LAVEL'. While the writer attempts to use less common academic lexical items, these attempts often result in unnatural collocations or misuse, such as 'WATER ATTACK' and 'HIGHTED FLORES'. These lexical inaccuracies and noticeable spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the smooth delivery of ideas, placing the response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is severely restricted. The student attempts complex structures, but these attempts are almost entirely faulty, characterized by missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and pervasive errors in subject-verb agreement, such as 'BUILD TALL APARTMENT IS BENIFICIAL' and 'PEOPLE WAS DRAWN IN WATER'. Punctuation is also problematic, with spaces misplaced before commas and periods throughout the text. Because errors are very frequent and can cause considerable difficulty for the reader, this writing reflects the Band 4 descriptor profile.
