Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in agreement with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The writer includes supporting ideas such as environmental benefits, land preservation, and mitigating traffic, along with references to technology. However, these ideas remain somewhat underdeveloped and repetitive, leaning on generalisations without deep elaboration. For instance, the mention of AI scanning cities to provide information is introduced abruptly without clear explanation of how it directly relates to housing construction. Because all parts of the task are addressed and a consistent position is maintained throughout, the response aligns best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic and poor cohesion. For instance, moving from environmental benefits and building quality directly into land preservation and future generations lacks smooth transitional linking. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, such as starting sentences with 'Moreover' or 'In conculsion' where spelling errors further weaken connectivity. The overall arrangement demonstrates some basic organisation, but the lack of a clear overall progression places this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on high-frequency words like 'houses', 'cities', and 'land'. There are notable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'cicties', 'impartant', 'appleaing', 'bulid', 'enitre', 'imformation', 'hosptials', and 'conculsion'. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'infrastructural changes' and 'preservation', the noticeable errors in spelling and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the range. The lexical control is limited, corresponding to Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.0 based on the attempt to cover the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as tense inconsistencies in 'As the years went on, the economy has improved', subject-verb agreement issues like 'Shortage of houses have played', and awkward passive constructions such as 'AI can be helped to scan'. Punctuation is also problematic, including run-on sentences with comma splices, as seen in 'Large cities, have not enough houses to provide where buliding apartments can be a major help'. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for Band 4.0.
