Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that the best way to provide enough housing in big cities is through building tall apartment blocks. This essay strongly agrees with the above statement and will provide reasons to support this.
On one hand, there are a number of adavnatages for building tall apartment blocks as they provides us with sustainable and modern infrastructure which is very crucial for urban development and modernization. Moreover, when people live in apartments they have access to various public services such as metro and buses which reduces pollution and helps in a cleaner environment. In addition to this people really can't afford low level independent houses that costs a fortune. For example, people living in gurgaon usually rent out flats in tall apartments because it saves them 10 times the amount of money they would pay in a year if they bought an independent house.
On the other hand, there are some disadvanatges as well to build tall apartment blocks. Firstly, building tall apartment blocks usually restricts people in their own houses and leaves no space for a social gathering or an event. Secondly, if the block is not constructed properly as per the norms then it would be very difficult for the emergency services to perform rescue operations in times of an emergency situation or a natural calamity. For instance, in noida when a high rise apartment caught fire, the emergency services were not able to put out the fire due to the claustrophobic design of the block.
In conclusion, I think the number of advantages outweigh the disadvantages, proving that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build high-rise apartment blocks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the prompt and discussing both advantages and disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the references to high-rise apartments in Gurgaon and Noida. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, and the main arguments regarding sustainable infrastructure, environmental benefits, social isolation, and safety regulations are appropriately developed. This performance aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors, as all parts of the prompt are addressed and a clear stance is maintained with well-supported arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized and presents a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Moreover', 'In addition to this', and 'On the other hand' are utilized to guide the reader through the arguments, although some referencing and transitional links feel a little mechanical. Overall, the logical structure and clear flow fit comfortably within the Band 6.5 to Band 7 range, demonstrating sufficient control of paragraphing and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'sustainable infrastructure', 'urban development', 'natural calamity', and 'claustrophobic design'. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'adavnatages' instead of 'advantages', 'disadvanatges', and 'low level' instead of 'low-rise'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, but inaccuracies persist. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as 'as they provides' (subject-verb agreement), missing articles, and run-on sentences like 'Secondly, if the block is not constructed properly as per the norms then it would...'. While these errors occasionally disrupt the flow, they rarely impede overall communication. The presence of frequent minor errors alongside complex structures is characteristic of Band 6 performance.
