Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, the demand for residential areas is increasing rapidly. As a result, it is often argued that to address the increasing demand, constructing tall buildings is the most appropriate solution. I strongly agree with this statement, because, in megacities, there is severe shortage of land and it will be convenient for the city people to enjoy most of the modern facilities if they live in a particular building.

One of the primary reasons why a big city should have large apartment buildings is the acute scarcity of land in urban areas. In most of the cities, it is evident that for establishing industries or commercial spaces, authorities need acres of open spaces. Similarly, they are also responsible to make sure that a city should have enough spaces for parks, educational institutions or healthcare facilities. That is why, the proportion of land for constructing residential areas is limited. Due to this paradoxical situation, building megastructures for the city-dwellers is the most feasible option. Tokyo or New York can be the best examples to witness how large residential buildings have become a remarkable solution to an expanding population.

Furthermore, if large structures are built to accommodate the urban people, it will become much more easier for the governments or city councils to provide them with most of the modern civic facilities in a particular place, such as- shopping centers, hospitals, recreational hubs and so on. Because, when a huge number of people will live in any particular place, then it usually attracts the multi-national companies or other day-to-day service-providing organisations to collaborate with the concerned authority. Consequently, people will easily enjoy all the necessary needs and fulfill their desires, which will, in the long run, boost the economy of the country. Gulshan or Bashundhara housing societies are the best examples of this in Bangladesh.

In conclusion, with the increasing demand for houses in city areas and considering the shortage of available land, building tall residential blocks is the best possible solution. This will give the respective governments the opportunity to serve their people with necessary civic facilities and contribute to the progress of a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear position ('I strongly agree with this statement') and supporting it throughout the essay. The first body paragraph explores the scarcity of land in major urban centers, citing Tokyo and New York as valid examples. The second body paragraph discusses the convenience of centralized civic facilities, supporting the argument with local examples. The ideas are well-extended and directly relevant to the prompt. The overall stance remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion, meeting the Band 7 and 8 criteria for task response well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, moving to land scarcity, then to civic amenities, and finally concluding effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader, although transitional phrasing occasionally feels slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in cohesive flow would elevate the score further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate to wide range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion, including terms like 'paradoxical situation', 'feasible option', 'acutely scarcity', and 'multi-national companies'. There are occasional slight lexical inaccuracies, such as 'acutely scarcity' instead of 'acute scarcity', and 'much more easier' which contains a grammatical redundancy. However, the lexical resource is flexible enough to convey precise meanings, and errors do not impede communication. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or causal clauses such as 'when a huge number of people will live in any particular place, then it usually attracts...'. There are some grammatical errors, most notably the comparative mistake 'much more easier' and tense inconsistency in dependent clauses ('when a huge number of people will live'). Punctuation is generally controlled, and despite the minor errors, the majority of sentences are clear and communicate the intended meaning effectively.
