Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, the demand for residential areas is increasing rapidly. As a result, it is often argued that to address the increasing demand, constructing tall buildings is the most appropriate solution. I strongly agree with this statement, because, in megacities, there is a severe shortage of land, and it will be convenient for the city people to enjoy most of the modern facilities if they live in a particular building.

One of the primary reasons why a big city should have large apartment buildings is the acute scarcity of land in urban areas. In most of the cities, it is evident that for establishing industries or commercial spaces, authorities need acres of open spaces. Similarly, they are also responsible for making sure that a city has enough spaces for parks, educational institutions, or healthcare facilities. That is why the proportion of land for constructing residential areas is limited. Due to this paradoxical situation, building megastructures for the city-dwellers is the most feasible option. Tokyo or New York can be the best examples to witness how large residential buildings have become a remarkable solution to an expanding population.

Furthermore, if large structures are built to accommodate the urban people, it will become much easier for the governments or city councils to provide them with most of the modern civic facilities in a particular place, such as shopping centers, hospitals, recreational hubs, and so on. Because when a huge number of people live in any particular place, then it usually attracts the multinational companies or other day-to-day service-providing organizations to collaborate with the concerned authority. Consequently, people will easily enjoy all the necessary needs and fulfill their desires, which will, in the long run, boost the economy of the country. Gulshan or Bashundhara housing societies are the best examples of this in Bangladesh.

In conclusion, with the increasing demand for houses in city areas and considering the shortage of available land, building tall residential blocks is the best possible solution. This will give the respective governments the opportunity to serve their people with necessary civic facilities and contribute to the progress of a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear and well-developed stance that tall apartment blocks are the best solution to housing shortages in large cities. The introduction outlines the writer's position, and the body paragraphs present extended and supported ideas, such as land scarcity and the efficiency of providing civic infrastructure in high-density zones. Examples like Tokyo, New York, and specific locations in Bangladesh effectively support the arguments. The ideas are well-developed and maintain relevance throughout, corresponding nicely to the Band 7 or 8 descriptors. However, because some generalisations regarding service provision could be tightened for complete sophistication, a solid Band 7.5 is awarded.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with land scarcity in the second paragraph and civic facilities in the third. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently, and referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band levels. Overall, the structural flow meets the standard for a clear Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The writer displays a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'residential areas', 'acute scarcity', 'paradoxical situation', and 'multinational companies'. There is an awareness of collocation and less common lexical items, such as 'megastructures' and 'city-dwellers'. While occasional minor inaccuracies in phrasing appear (e.g., 'city people' instead of 'urban residents'), the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings without impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 7 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple forms, displaying frequent error-free sentences. The writer successfully employs conditional and participial constructions, such as 'when a huge number of people live in any particular place, then it usually attracts...' and 'considering the shortage of available land'. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, though minor awkwardness in clause structures occasionally surfaces. The proportion of error-free sentences and the variety of structures demonstrate solid Band 7 capability.
