Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response takes a clear position in agreement with the prompt and presents some relevant ideas concerning residential space and social cohesion. However, the task is under the 232-word minimum length requirement, having only 232 words, which directly impacts the depth of idea development. While the writer touches on population density and community living, the arguments remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed due to the length constraints. For instance, the discussion on cultural celebrations in flats is relevant but lacks robust elaboration. Consequently, this prevents the response from achieving a higher score. To improve, ensure you fully develop each body paragraph with comprehensive explanations and concrete examples while strictly meeting the minimum word count of 250 words.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall organization with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief concluding sentence. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive referencing and mechanical linking phrases. For example, expressions like 'To commence with' and 'Moreover' are used, but sentences within paragraphs often lack smooth transitions, as seen in the run-on structure of '...in metropolis in which great hustle and bustle because of numerious industries...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and abrupt shifts. Referencing words are occasionally ambiguous, making it difficult to follow the logical flow at times. To reach a higher band, focus on using cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each sentence links logically to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally strain comprehension. Examples of lexical errors include 'residente' or 'resident', 'habitate', 'faacilities', 'challanging', 'tahgy', and the superlative form 'bestest'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'metropolis', 'hustle and bustle', and 'bumper to bumper traffic', but these are often undermined by inaccurate collocation or grammatical form. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but lacks the precision required for higher bands. To improve, pay closer attention to word formation, spelling conventions, and avoid overusing informal or incorrect superlatives like 'bestest'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical structure is heavily limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences and overly long, error-ridden complex attempts. The text suffers from frequent grammatical errors, such as missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and faulty subject-verb agreement, as seen in 'everyone feel calm', 'some believes', and 'every religion have own occassion'. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with sentence boundaries, leading to run-on sentences that lack proper coordination or subordination. While the writer attempts complex structures, these constructions are almost always faulty and impede the fluency of the text. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and correctly using subordinate clauses.
