Student answer (Band 4.5)

Now, everyone wants to live in the city; facilities who making the city life eye-catching. Some people argue to make lage apartment blocks where more people may live there. However, in my view, the government must be allowed to build apartments in the city due to the enormous facilities of schools and hospitals compared to villages, where there are no facilities.

Basically, I agree with the point that people want to build huge apartments, for living purposes or some make for companies. Due to which people get a lot of jobs, facilities like schools,or healthcare hospitals. As a result, the economy improves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at just 123 words. Consequently, the task cannot be fully addressed or developed. While the writer attempts to state a position ('in my view, the government must be allowed to build apartments...'), the ideas remain severely underdeveloped and incomplete. The response mentions urban facilities like schools and hospitals, but the sudden cutoff prevents any sustained argument or full exploration of the prompt regarding tall apartment blocks. According to official IELTS guidelines, under-length scripts must be heavily penalised for task achievement because the prompt is only minimally answered. The writing breaks off mid-sentence at the end ('as a res'), leaving the core arguments unfinished and resulting in a band score of 4.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The structure of the essay is severely compromised by its extremely short length and abrupt ending. While the writer attempts to introduce a main idea and uses simple cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Basically', and 'As a result', the logical progression of ideas breaks down quickly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete and ungrammatical, trailing off mid-sentence. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'some make for companies'. Overall, the organization lacks the clear overall progression and sufficient cohesive management required for higher bands, placing it firmly at a band 4.5 level due to the fragmented and incomplete nature of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding. Examples of inadequate word choice include 'facilities who making the city life eye-catching' and 'lage apartment blocks', where spelling and collocation errors are prominent. The writer attempts some less common phrases like 'enormous facilities' and 'improves the economy', but these lack precision and natural collocation. Word forms are also misused, such as 'facilities who making' instead of 'facilities that make'. Due to the limited range of vocabulary and frequent lexical inaccuracies that strain the reader's comprehension, this response aligns with the descriptors for a band 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and flawed complex sentence structures. There are frequent, heavy errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include 'facilities who making the city life eye-catching' (fragmented relative clause and incorrect verb form), 'Some people argue to make lage apartment blocks' (awkward infinitive and missing preposition), and the unfinished sentence at the conclusion ('as a res'). Punctuation is also mishandled, particularly with comma splices and missing periods. Because errors are frequent, systemic, and occasionally distort meaning—culminating in an incomplete sentence—this performance merits a band 4.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
