Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely debated that the most effective way to accomudate people in large cities is by building apartment blocks. While, houses remain suitable for certain families and offer more privacy, I agree with this view, because apartment buildings use land more efficiently and make public services more accessible.

To begin with, detached houses with privategardens offer several advantages. One of the main benifits is that having a private garden allows perents to engage with their young children in out door activities such as gardening and playing hide and seek. Children growing up in such an environment are mpore likely to develop healthy habits. Moreover, houses provide a great level of privacy. Sincehomeowner do not share walls or common area with neighbors, they are less likely to be disturbed by noise and can enjoy quieter, more peaceful life.

However, due to repid population growth in recent decades many countries have experienced housing shortages. Therefore, I believe that building upwards is more practical solution, as it enables cities to accumodate a large number of people in a relatively small area. High-rise residential buildings provide housing for thousands of residents, while also preserving land for parks, schools, and commercial areas.

Furthermore, apartments are mainly located close to public transport, workplaces, and shopping malls. This makes daily life more convenient while alsoreducing commuting time. In addition, apartments residents often have access to share facilities such as gyms and playgrounds, which significantly improve their quality of life.

In conclusion, despite the benifits of houses offer, constructing high-rise apartment buildings is the most effective way to maximise the land use, as they accommodate more people in a relatively small area and improve daily life by by providing access to numerous facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages of houses and the reasons for building tall apartment blocks, presenting a clear position throughout. The writer's view is supported with relevant ideas, such as land efficiency, public service accessibility, and the preservation of green spaces. For instance, the argument that high-rise buildings 'enable cities to accomodate a large number of people in a relatively small area' directly supports the thesis. While some ideas like the benefits of private gardens are introduced, they are effectively contrasted with the necessity of vertical living. The arguments are extended reasonably well, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction of the debate, through the counter-argument about houses, to the main supporting arguments regarding high-rise apartments, and finally to a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'To begin with', 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore'. However, there are minor issues with referencing and mechanical transitions, such as 'despite the benifits of houses offer' in the conclusion, which slightly disrupt the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is used appropriately, placing the response firmly at Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'efficiently', 'residential', 'infrastructure' (implied), and 'maximise'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors throughout the essay, including 'accomudate', 'privategardens', 'benifits', 'perents', 'out door', 'mpore', 'Sincehomeowner', and 'repid'. Despite these lexical and spelling inaccuracies, the meaning is rarely impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended arguments, aligning with a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'While houses remain suitable for certain families... I agree with this view, because...'. There is a variety of complex structures attempted, but grammar and punctuation errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Examples include missing articles or prepositions and agreement errors like 'Sincehomeowner do not share walls or common area'. Additionally, there are awkward phrasing issues such as 'despite the benifits of houses offer' and doubled prepositions ('by by providing'). These errors rarely impede communication, placing the grammar at a Band 6.
