Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether building tall apartment blocks is the best solution for providing homes in large cities. The writer takes a clear position, stating that they strongly agree. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with points lacking full elaboration. Furthermore, the response suffers from a critical task achievement penalty because the length requirement of a minimum 250 words is not met, as the student's response contains only 248 words. Despite presenting relevant arguments about saving land and accommodating growing populations, the overall development does not fully reach the higher bands, resulting in a score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing an attempt at a standard structure including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesion and abrupt transitions, such as 'In the one hand' and 'However, tall blocks solves citizen's problem'. Referencing is often unclear, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas lacks smoothness, making the overall arrangement somewhat disjointed and earning a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'large buildings', 'homes', and 'population'. There are notable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Built the large buildings', 'separat houses', and 'androable city'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'populataion', 'togather', 'Europ', 'statage', 'planing', and 'wzays'. While the intended meaning is usually discernible, the lexical range is limited and noticeable errors restrict the score to a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, such as 'Built the large buildings for apartments is a good way for homes, because the growth of population in urban areas is a serious issue.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and punctuation throughout the text, including fragments and run-on structures like 'Government use this statage with a proper planing for controlling population.' These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a band 5.0 level.
