Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by expressing a clear position of total agreement regarding tall apartment blocks. However, the task achievement is significantly undermined by two main factors. First, the essay falls short of the word count requirement, containing only 215 words against the mandatory 250-word minimum, which leads to a direct penalty in this category. Second, while the first body paragraph touches upon efficient use of space and low-income housing, the supporting example is vague and lacks sufficient development. The second body paragraph mentions environmental concerns but remains quite superficial without explaining how tall buildings specifically solve environmental problems. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed, aligning the response with a Band 5 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic organizational structure. However, paragraphing is problematic; the conclusion is extremely brief, and the overall progression lacks strong logical links between paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph starting with 'Moreover'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and the overall flow is hindered by the limited development of ideas. While there is a recognisable structure, the lack of smooth progression and flawed cohesion places this text firmly in the Band 5 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a basic vocabulary range that is minimally adequate for the task. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'plethora', 'accommodations', and 'infrastructure', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'paragraps', 'seientist', 'gadil', and 'wll'. Furthermore, the phrase 'give rise to' is used awkwardly in the conclusion. These errors do not completely obscure the meaning, but they do cause some difficulty for the reader, which reflects the Band 5 lexical resource descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. Punctuation and capitalization are inconsistent, as seen in the lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun 'I' throughout the essay, misplaced commas before punctuation marks, and run-on sentences. Grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'an importance part of the population' instead of 'an important part' and 'assist to citizens' instead of 'assist citizens', occur regularly. Although some basic sentences are accurate, the frequency of errors places the grammar score at Band 5.
