Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response presents a clear position agreeing with the prompt, noting that tall apartment blocks save land and provide affordable housing. However, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting detail due to the restricted length of the essay. The student's response contains only 183 words, which falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement for Task 2. Consequently, the task has only been partially addressed. Examples such as referencing Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Lahore are introduced but not fully explained to strengthen the argument. Under the official descriptors, the failure to meet the minimum word count and the limited development of ideas align with a Band 5 score for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay displays a basic overall arrangement, attempting to separate ideas into distinct paragraphs. However, paragraphing is irregular and mechanical. Basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'In today,s rapidly changing world,' 'For example,' and 'in conclusion,' but their formatting and punctuation are often faulty. Logical progression is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts between ideas, lack of proper transitions, and severe sentence-level fragmentation. Referencing and substitution are handled poorly, making it difficult to follow the flow of argument in places. Overall, the organizational features are inadequate and repetitive, which places the response firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to Band 4.0 for persistent coherence issues.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently revolving around simple terms like 'land,' 'prices,' 'home,' and 'apartment.' There are numerous word choice and spelling errors, such as 'afforedit' (afford it), 'demage' (damage), 'sinificiant' (significant), 'buldings' (buildings), 'appartment' (apartment), and 'commen' (common). These lexical inadequacies and frequent spelling mistakes strain the reader and obscure meaning in several places. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for expressing very simple thoughts, but falls short of a Band 5 due to the high density of basic spelling and word-formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are consistently flawed, featuring major errors in punctuation, capitalization, and syntax (e.g., 'In today,s rapidly changing world, the issue of has become a topic of much debate i strongly agree...'). There are frequent errors in verb tense, agreement, and prepositions, such as 'tall apartment provoid 100 homes in one land' and 'they used the on electric meter.' Punctuation is largely neglected or misused throughout the response. These frequent errors frequently distort meaning and cause difficulty for the reader, matching the core descriptors for Band 4.0.
