Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that the ultimate alternative to provide accomodation to individuals in growing cities is to build high skyscrapers. I strongly agree with this view, it can fulfill the demand of houses and also economically benefitted for the urban sprawl.

One of the most compelling reasons to build tall apartment blocks is that the demand of houses far exceeds the supply in cities. This is particularly due to rural urban migration because numerous people were moving to cities in search of better opportunities and for the improved standard of livings. Moreover, building apartments blocks in cities is the best alternative to provide accomodation to large number of people which saves the space also. For instance, in rapidly growing cities such as Mumbai , government made initiatives to build tall buildings in order to accomadate large number of people. This clearly highlights that building skycrapers mitigate the longstanding issue of houses.

Another reason of building large blocks in cities is to provide economic progress to the nation. This is particulary because the urban development around the cities attracts foreign tourists in the country to generate more profits. In addition, more employment opportunities will be created for the people, hence enable access to education, healthcare and nutition improved which raises the disposable income of the people. For instance, in Dubai, Burj Khalifa, which attracts large number of tourists and generate revenue from tourists which they invest in the development of the city. This cleraly demonstrates that building high skycrapers generates more revenue and provide employment to millions of people in industries such as hotels, travel agencies, transport.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that building tall apartments blocks provide several benefits such as providing rising housing demand and increasing the gross domestic product of the nation

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear and well-supported position in agreement with the statement. The writer extends and supports ideas throughout the essay, such as discussing housing demand caused by rural-urban migration and citing real-world examples like Mumbai and Dubai. However, there are some minor tendencies to over-generalise and slightly repetitive arguments regarding economic progress and tourism. Overall, the main parts of the task are well covered, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'For instance', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, with the first body paragraph focusing on housing needs and the second on economic benefits. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring an easy and logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'urban sprawl', 'rural urban migration', and 'disposable income'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'economically benefitted' instead of 'economically beneficial', 'accomodate' with spelling inconsistencies, and 'high skycrapers'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the range is sufficient to allow some precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas. While there are frequent error-free sentences, several grammatical errors persist, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('numerous people were moving') and awkward phrasing ('which they invest in the development'). Punctuation is mostly acceptable, but some run-on structures and missing articles slightly lower the overall accuracy. Control is generally adequate for a band 6.
