Student answer (Band 6.0)

Increasing population and their domestic needs is a common issue of large cities in the present. I would like to discuss a couple of aspects in catering this problem. Large numbers of population has its own benefits and drawbacks in any society.

The solution of accomodating a big numbered population is to build tall apartment blocks, i fully agree with this statement because it can minimize the huge requirement of land to build single story homes. Taller structures will help accomodate more number of individuals and less construction material .e.g. sewerage pipelines, electrical wiring. This is a useful approach for densly populated cities for example, Lahore has over 20 million population which has made the city and roads feel congusted so this idea can help making roads even wider and peaceful even in the peak hours. In addition, building taller resedential towers can save a lot of spend on manforce because large cranes and lifts are often used in this type of construction and it completes in a quite shorter time even if we start building 3,4,5 blocks they can be built using the same machines in a relatively calculated time frame.

On the other hand, with a list of key benefits, taller towers are more prone to earthquakes and speedy winds. This type of construction needs a fully supervised framework by a team of civil engineers ensuring all the significant safety aspects for a long term future of these projects. Goverment and political bodies should also regulate these kind of projects to ensure the accomodation requirements of growing population.

To conclude, this is a practical way to benefit the society especially the people who prefer to live in the metropolitan cities due to the nature of their work or education. Also it help providing people with a sustainable solution of housing demands in the longer run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task and presents a clear position agreeing with the prompt. The writer outlines several valid arguments in favour of building tall apartment blocks, such as minimizing land usage, reducing infrastructure costs, and easing traffic congestion, citing the example of Lahore. However, some ideas are a bit underdeveloped or border on general assertions, such as the claim regarding construction efficiency and savings on manpower. The counterargument regarding earthquakes and winds is introduced in the third paragraph, adding some balance, although it is brief. Overall, the main parts of the task are covered adequately, earning a Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate main ideas, such as the benefits of high-rise buildings versus their risks. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as 'In addition, building taller resedential towers can save a lot of spend on manforce because...' where the transition and referencing could be smoother. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but certain transitional phrases feel abrupt, placing this criterion firmly at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'densly populated', 'metropolitan cities', and 'sustainable solution'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'accomodating' (accommodating), 'accomodate' (accommodate), 'densly' (densely), 'congusted' (congested), 'resedential' (residential), and 'Goverment' (Government). Word choices also occasionally lack precision, such as 'save a lot of spend on manforce'. These errors place the lexical control at a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures, such as in 'Taller structures will help accomodate more number of individuals and less construction material .e.g. sewerage pipelines, electrical wiring.' Punctuation and mechanical issues are present, such as incorrect abbreviation usage ('.e.g.') and missing commas. There are grammatical inaccuracies like 'more number of individuals' instead of 'a greater number of individuals' and 'regulate these kind of projects' instead of 'these kinds of projects'. Communication is not impeded, but errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, resulting in a score of 6.0.
