Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether building tall apartment blocks is the best solution to urban housing shortages, taking a partial stance. While the writer touches upon both advantages, such as accommodating the growing population and boosting the economy, and drawbacks like pollution and sanitation issues, the development of these ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the point regarding population increase is restated multiple times without much new extension. Examples are provided, such as mentioning Mingora city and typhoid fever, which helps support the arguments. However, the overall position could be articulated with greater clarity and depth to reach higher bands. Because the response meets the length requirement, the evaluation focuses strictly on the content and task coverage provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions between sentences. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be basic and repetitive, such as excessive reliance on 'so' and 'and'. For example, sentences often chain multiple clauses together with coordinating conjunctions rather than utilizing sophisticated referencing or substitution. Paragraphing is attempted, though the final conclusion is very brief and abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which requires the reader to work harder to follow the logical flow of arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic ideas, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'sanitation', 'migration', and 'distribution', but there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'soid' instead of 'said' or struggling with 'orofeccal rout' (fecal-oral route). Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'slove' and 'familly', occur throughout the text and cause some distraction for the reader, though they rarely completely impede communication. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of functional academic vocabulary and pay closer attention to accurate word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The text relies heavily on a mix of simple and long, run-on coordinate sentences joined by conjunctions like 'and' and 'so', rather than a controlled variety of complex grammatical structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement, article use, and prepositions, such as 'to build a tall apartment with many blocks and I am agree to some extent to slove the problems' and 'if many families living in one apartment so there will be a great deal'. Punctuation is also weak, with long sentences lacking proper internal punctuation or full stops. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.
