Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that building high apartment blocks is the crucial way to facilitate enough houses in big cities. Although there maybe some other ways to provide sufficient homes, i think the best way would be building tall apartment block.

Nowadays, many people are migrating to larger cities from small cities to survive by doing jobs. As a result, the cities becoming crowded day by day. However, all of them could not find their accommodation. Because of that, many people sleep in the streets. For example, when a new family shift to a big city it is very difficult for them to rent a house instantly or sometimes they can not find any homes due the high demand.

On the other hand, to solve the housing issue, many builders are building small buildings but only a few flats. Therefore, it provide any positive impact to mitigate the house shortage issue. Furthermore, the buildings become congested due to the size of land. For instance, many individuals are constructing multiple buildings in one land, whereas there should be only one building based on the size of the land. However, if the apartments were big enough than there won't be a problem of congestion as well as availability of homes would increased.

In conclusion, for a over crowed cities, it is very high time to build tall building blocks so that there can be many more house which can the best solution to the housing shortage. In my opinion, I completely agree with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent of agreement with building tall apartment blocks to solve housing shortages in large cities. A clear position is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Main ideas are presented, such as urbanization and urban congestion, but their development is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the body paragraphs touch upon population growth and land use, but these points are not fully extended with precise examples or deeper analysis. Consequently, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, along with four distinct paragraphs. However, logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices. For instance, transitional phrases like 'On the other hand' are misused, as the following paragraph does not present a contrasting argument, but rather elaborates on another aspect of the housing issue. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'many individuals are constructing multiple buildings in one land'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better management, placing this response at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic ideas about housing and urbanization. However, the range is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'facilitate enough houses', 'shift to a big city' instead of 'move', and 'over crowed cities'. Attempts at less common vocabulary often result in awkward phrasing, though meaning is rarely obscured. Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'than' instead of 'then', occur occasionally, aligning the response with Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are often faulty. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'there maybe', lower-case 'i', 'all of them could not find their accommodation', 'it provide any positive impact' (missing negative particle), and 'there won't be a problem... as well as availability... would increased'. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods and commas, are also present. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of errors places the grammar control solidly at Band 5.0.
