Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing in large cities. The student clearly states a position at the beginning ('i am agree with this statement') and attempts to support it with reasons, such as population growth and spatial limitations. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For example, the points about space constraints and population increase are restated multiple times without significant extension. Furthermore, the examples provided lack specificity and contain implausible details, such as a New York Times article from 2026. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the lack of fully developed, well-supported arguments places this response firmly at Band 4.0, as ideas remain basic and somewhat tangential in their execution.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text demonstrates an attempt at paragraphing, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, although the transitions between ideas are mechanical and repetitive. The student relies heavily on formulaic phrases such as 'To began with', 'To explain it', 'To cite an example', and 'Furthermore' to structure the essay. Unfortunately, referencing and logical progression are frequently faulty; ideas circle back on themselves without advancing the argument. For instance, the transition from population increase to the New York Times citation does not flow logically. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the paragraphs is weak, meaning information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. This aligns with the Band 4 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily restricted. The student frequently misuses words or uses incorrect word forms, such as 'sheilters' for shelters, 'counstrust' for construct, 'artical' for article, 'artictat' for architect or artistry, 'certunt' for certain, and 'problen' for problem. Furthermore, spelling errors are pervasive throughout the response (e.g., 'wnt' instead of want, 'use full', 'afforadble', 'increaseing'). There is no evidence of less common vocabulary used with precision or stylistic awareness. The lexical range is minimal and frequently causes strain for the reader, matching the Band 4 criteria where basic, repetitive vocabulary and frequent errors impede fluent reading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is extremely weak throughout the response. The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but these attempts are almost entirely faulty. There are severe and persistent errors in tense usage ('population of the world are increase'), subject-verb agreement ('every body need'), missing articles, and run-on sentences joined improperly without punctuation. For example, the sentence 'To explain it, every body need a place or sheilter of spend their life we call that place home' showcases multiple structural breakdowns. The majority of sentences contain grammatical errors that frequently cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 4 performance.
