Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's world, providing enough homes in large cities has become a widely discussed issue. While some people may hold a different opinion, I completely agree that building tall apartment blocks is a good way to provide homes because it saves space and helps many people.
To begin with, one of the primary reasons why I support this view is that tall buildings can provide more homes in a small area. This is because many flats can be built in one building, which enables more families to live in cities. Not only does this save land, but it also makes better use of available space. For example, a tall apartment building can provide homes for hundreds of families on a small piece of land. Furthermore, people can live near schools, offices and shops. Therefore, tall buildings are a practical approach for large cities.
Another convincing reason why I agree with this statement is that tall apartment blocks can help reduce housing problems. Although some people claim that houses with gardens are better, I believe this argument is less persuasive because large cities have limited land. As a result, more people can find homes at reasonable prices. Moreover, governments should make these buildings safe and comfortable. In addition, these buildings can also reduce traffic and make public transport more convenient for city residents. If governments and organisations work together, better housing will become easier to achieve.
In conclusion, I completely agree that building tall apartment blocks is a good way to provide enough homes in large cities because it saves land and provides housing for many people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response clearly addresses all parts of the task by taking a firm position ("I completely agree that building tall apartment blocks is a good way to provide homes") and supporting it with relevant ideas. The main body paragraphs explore valid points regarding land conservation, spatial efficiency, and alleviating housing shortages. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some of the supporting ideas remain somewhat general and could have been extended with more specific real-world examples or deeper elaboration. For instance, the mention that tall buildings "reduce traffic and make public transport more convenient" is stated without a clear logical bridge. Consequently, the development reaches the threshold of Band 6.5 to 7.0. Because the ideas are relevant and the stance is clear throughout, a score of 6.5 is well-justified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical progression. Information and ideas are organized into appropriate paragraphs, each introduced by a clear topic sentence, such as "To begin with, one of the primary reasons why I support this view..." and "Another convincing reason why I agree...". Cohesive devices such as "Furthermore," "Therefore," "Moreover," and "In addition," are utilized to link ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or overused. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader logically from introduction to body points and a clear conclusion. The management of cohesion overall warrants a Band 7.0, as the logical organization is clear and progression is maintained throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as "housing problems," "reasonable prices," "public transport," and "spatial efficiency" (implied). There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like "practical approach," "convincing reason," and "persuasive," which demonstrate flexibility. Word choice is generally appropriate, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While the vocabulary is not advanced enough to reach Band 8 due to a lack of sophisticated or idiomatic phrasing, it comfortably exceeds the Band 6 descriptor by demonstrating sufficient range and precision for the discussion without causing communication difficulties.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., "While some people may hold a different opinion, I completely agree that building tall apartment blocks is a good way..."). There is good control of basic grammar, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, and while complex structures sometimes exhibit slight repetitiveness rather than soaring flexibility, the errors are virtually non-existent, making communication completely transparent. This level of accuracy combined with a functional mix of structures points directly to a Band 7.0.
