Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response partially addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of building tall apartment blocks in large cities and providing a clear, though simple, personal position. Ideas are presented, such as reducing land scarcity and preserving green spaces, but they remain somewhat under-developed and are expressed in a repetitive manner. For instance, the point about infrastructure development is touched upon briefly without substantial elaboration or compelling examples. While the writer covers the prompt's requirements adequately to form a coherent argument, the depth of task fulfilment is constrained by over-generalised statements and a somewhat formulaic essay structure. Consequently, the performance aligns best with the Band 5.5 descriptors, rounding to a band score of 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay attempts a clear logical organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices, such as 'The following discussion explain...' and 'This essay is a double-egded sword.' Paragraphing is used, but the structural integrity is compromised by disjointed single-sentence paragraphs at the beginning and improper grouping of ideas. Transitional phrases are occasionally inaccurate or overused, and referencing pronouns do not always clearly point to their antecedents. These persistent issues in logical flow and cohesive management place the response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'metropolitan', 'scarcity', and 'favourable'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, including 'large tall flats', 'reliable method of built apartment', and 'maintaince cost'. Spelling errors like 'postive', 'approch', 'extremly', and 'maintaince' also occur, along with repetitive phrasing such as 'large cities' and 'both side'. While meaning is generally conveyed, these frequent vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'The following discussion explain' and 'tall buildings considered as', as well as incorrect article usage and verb forms in 'it increase traffic and pollution' and 'living quality can be effected'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, notably with 'IT' in the middle of a sentence. Because attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and errors are recurrent throughout the text, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
