Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is believed that building large apartments give enough number of houses to accommodate to many people in large cities. This essay completely agrees with the point of vertical housing in large cities because it saves up a lot of space to use for other useful purposes and accommodates large number of people.
Vertical housing system in densely populated and busy cities is very useful, it saves space for parks and green spaces, this also helps protects nature, and more land can be dedicated to agriculture. In contrast, low rise, standalone houses require more of the area, that disturbs nature and it also results in reducing fertile land that can be used for growing organic food and other crops. Few years back, plan of vertical housing scheme was introduced in Pakistan for metropolitan cities by government with the aim to provide enough number of houses and to keep the land for the agriculture.
Furthermore, in densely populated cities there are large number of people residing due to their jobs and their studies and if there is horizontal housing scheme, cities will not be able to accommodate large number of people. By building tall apartment there exist enough houses to accommodate this population. In Pakistan, Islamabad and Karachi mostly follow vertical housing scheme so that they can provide home to huge number of people studying and working there.
Urbanization does not mean converting lands to stone but to thoughtfully design cities to get most benefit out of them. Tall apartment blocks are best in providing sufficient housing with the conservation of nature and land for other useful purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses the prompt by taking a strong, consistent position agreeing with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing in large cities. The student supports this stance with relevant arguments, such as saving space for parks, green areas, and agriculture, as well as accommodating large numbers of job-seekers and students in metropolitan areas. Specific examples from Pakistan, including Islamabad and Karachi, are used effectively to illustrate the points made. While the ideas could have been slightly more deeply extended to reach higher bands, the response fully addresses all parts of the task with a clear position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall progression and logical organization. The introduction states the writer's position clearly, and body paragraphs follow a logical structure focusing on distinct arguments regarding land conservation and urban population needs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'By building tall apartment' are employed, although there are minor issues with cohesion and punctuation, such as run-on sentences ('Vertical housing system in densely populated and busy cities is very useful, it saves space...'). Overall, the information is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'densely populated', 'vertical housing scheme', 'metropolitan cities', and 'urbanization' are used correctly and fit the context. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'building large apartments give enough number of houses to accommodate to many people' (instead of 'accommodate many people') and 'converting lands to stone'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly and allows for some discussion of abstract urban planning concepts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There is good variety in sentence structures, particularly in the discussion of urban planning challenges. However, grammatical errors and punctuation issues persist throughout the text, including comma splices ('...is very useful, it saves space...') and missing articles or prepositions ('by government', 'tall apartment' instead of 'tall apartments'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to understand the intended message without significant difficulty.
