Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the growth of total population is a major issue. People are facing accommodation problems. Some people disagree for the construction of high-rise buildings in cities, but i strongly agree with the point that tall buildings are very reliable because not only it can accommodate many people in a small area, but also provide a modern design and better services.

Firstly, the main benefit of constructing tall buildings is cities can provide more space for people, by consuming a small area. In the main cities it is very common in many different countries all over the world. For instance, New York is considered as the home of high rise buildings in America. There famous channel CNN had recently done a survey, which stated that 72% of the New York population lives in tall apartment blocks. Therefore it is really an effective way to provide homes to people.

Secondly, design is also very important in the image of the city. The tall buildings provide a sleek attractive look to the city. The high rise buildings demonstrate a far better modern design than houses. Take an example of of Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo was in the top 5 modern cities in the recent United Nation report. The design play a keen role in it. Although, the designs of the high-rise buildings are also very important.

Lastly, the tall buildings are far better from houses in terms of services. It has better security and as well as community.

To sum up, I believe that high rise buildings should be promoted not only because of their modern looks, but also for better services and to solve accommodation problem

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing. The main ideas are outlined in the introduction and elaborated upon in the body paragraphs, covering space efficiency, aesthetic design, and building services. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat superficial. For instance, the reference to a CNN survey about New York is a relevant example, but the explanation lacks depth. Furthermore, the final body paragraph is extremely brief and under-developed, consisting of only two short sentences. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6 because it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, even though some points are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear stance established from the beginning. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, using sequential markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'To sum up'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and awkward. For instance, the transition in the final paragraph ('It has better security and as well as community') lacks fluency and precise pronoun referencing. Additionally, there are minor issues with logical progression where ideas feel slightly abrupt, such as the sudden conclusion regarding Tokyo's design. Despite these weaknesses, the logical flow is generally maintained, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for coherent arrangement and identifiable overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accommodation problems', 'high-rise buildings', and 'sleek attractive look'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text. For example, the phrase 'growth of total population' is unnatural, and the sentence 'design is also very important in the image of the city' uses prepositional collocation that is slightly off. There are also repetition issues, such as repeating the word 'design' multiple times in the third paragraph. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical limitations and occasional imprecise collocations place this response firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause subordination as seen in 'not only it can accommodate many people in a small area, but also provide a modern design'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There is a notable subject-verb agreement error ('not only it can' instead of 'not only can it'), a lowercase pronoun ('i'), and a missing preposition in 'disagree for the construction' (instead of 'disagree with'). Additionally, there are punctuation and phrasing flaws, such as 'Take an example of of Tokyo'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures fulfill the requirements for a Band 6 score.
