Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many individuals and families are shiftingto big urban areas for better lifestyle. However some people believe that large buildings such as flats will be the approperiate way to give shelters to these citizens. I completely agree with this point of view and in this essay i will support my opinion with examples.

Firstly, population of towns are now increasing rapidly throughout the world, And there is no further space available for adjusting new people. However, building huge apartments can solve this problem in such a better maner. For instance, A flat can be build consuming less space of land, And also big number of housholds can be live there with similer facilities which they have in a modern house. To put this in perspective, the same plot of land that holds two or three separate houses could instead support an apartment block housing dozens of families, making far more efficient use of increasingly limited urban space.

Secondly, building a separate house in develped places can be very costly and also have a lot of efforts and waiting time. On the other hand, buying a ready made home in a flat can be a very cost effective and stressed free. For example, flats have already their water supply systems, but you need to build by yourself if you make a separate house. This also reduces pressure on city infrastructure, since utilities such as water, electricity and public transport can be provided more efficiently to a large number of residents living close together, rather than being extended separately to scattered individual houses.

In contrast, there are some people who argue that, flats dont have enough natural sun light sytem which can arise some problems. For example, every flat owner dont have a roof except the top one, they cant dry their cloths in the day time and also sun light is very important for human bodies. However, I still believe that flats remain the better option overall, since these problems can be addressed through thoughtful architectural design, such as adding large windows, skylights, and private balconies at the planning stage, allowing residents on every floor to receive adequate natural light.

To conclude, building taller apartments can be a perfect way to adjust more population in cities. I Largely believe that this is a poitive approach, and as urban populations continue to grow while available land becomes increasingly scarce, this solution is likely to become even more essential in the years ahead.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear, well-developed position on whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The writer introduces a clear opinion in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay, including a thoughtful counter-argument paragraph that discusses natural sunlight before successfully refuting it with architectural solutions. Ideas are well-supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as comparing the land footprint of separate houses versus apartment blocks and discussing urban infrastructure efficiency. There is a tendency to occasionally generalise, but the overall task response easily satisfies the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, well-defined body paragraphs featuring distinct arguments, a counter-argument paragraph, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast' are used to structure the ideas effectively, though some transitions are occasionally mechanical or slightly clunky. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is generally clear, guiding the reader smoothly from one point to the next, which aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasings such as 'increasingly limited urban space', 'cost effective', and 'infrastructural efficiency'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'shiftingto', 'approperiate', 'housholds', 'similer', 'build' instead of 'built', 'develped', 'stressed free', and 'poitive'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writer from achieving a higher band. The lexical range is sufficient for precision, but control over spelling and word forms needs sharpening, making a Band 6.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures through relative clauses and conditional-like explanations (e.g., 'the same plot of land that holds two or three separate houses could instead support an apartment block...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('every flat owner dont have', 'flats have already their water supply systems'), capitalization mistakes ('i'), missing prepositions, and awkward passive constructions ('A flat can be build'). Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary comma splices, also occur. Because errors persist and sometimes cause slight distraction despite the communication remaining clear, a Band 6.0 is awarded.
