Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The student states a partial agreement and outlines some general points regarding big city living and tall buildings. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat superficial. For example, the student mentions that living in a city provides better facilities for work and study, but this point remains under-developed without specific examples directly linked to high-rise apartment living. Furthermore, the argument occasionally drifts into general advantages and disadvantages of large cities rather than focusing squarely on tall apartment blocks as a housing solution. According to the Band 5 descriptors, the response addresses the task only partially with ideas that are somewhat limited and under-developed, warranting a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which shows an attempt at logical organisation. However, the overall progression is weak and lacks cohesive flow. Transition markers such as 'To commence with', 'To bi more precise', and 'To eleborate it' are used mechanically and repeatedly. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and pronoun usage makes connections between sentences confusing. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is faulty. These characteristics align closely with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion, where there is some organisation but no clear overall progression and cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or over-used.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'multifarious benefits' and 'phenomenon', but control is weak. There are frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'ere' for era, 'represented' for represent, 'biggest' for big, 'eleborate' for elaborate, 'esily' for easily, and 'pollutions' for pollution. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a limited vocabulary range. Based on the Band 5 descriptors, the vocabulary is limited and noticeable errors may cause some difficulty for the reader, making a band score of 5.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is poor. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there are multifarious benefits to live' instead of 'living', 'to taken better facility' instead of 'to take better facilities', and persistent spelling-based verb errors like 'bi' for be. Subject-verb agreement issues also appear, such as 'there are lot of traffic' and 'people d not hand that type of situation'. These frequent errors frequently impede smooth reading and affect the clarity of the text. This performance fits the Band 5 criteria, where frequent errors in grammar occur and can cause difficulty for the reader.
