Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement and supporting it with reasons such as land conservation, environmental protection, and health benefits. The main ideas are outlined throughout the essay, though they are somewhat repetitive and lack deeper extension. For instance, the point regarding oxygen and health is mentioned in both the third and fourth paragraphs without significant new development. Furthermore, some arguments rely on minor over-generalisations, such as the idea that tall buildings automatically change the temperature of a city. However, a clear stance is maintained from the introduction to the conclusion, satisfying the core requirements of a Band 6 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall logical arrangement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as land use versus health benefits. However, cohesion within and between sentences is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies on basic and repetitive cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' to link ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'which help them to control deforestation' where the pronoun antecedent is ambiguous. Overall, while the progression of ideas is discernible, the mechanical cohesive ties place this writing firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and heavily impacted by numerous spelling and word choice errors. Throughout the text, the student makes basic spelling errors, such as 'bluidings', 'facilarities', 'faccilarities', 'hight', and 'benefical'. The vocabulary used is quite repetitive, with phrases like 'tall apartment blocks', 'consume less land', and 'basic facilities' recurring frequently. While the student attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in collocation and form prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the core message, which aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text. There are recurring issues with articles ('in a control of deforestation', 'in big cities'), subject-verb agreement ('The thousand of people lives'), and singular/plural consistency ('tall apartments block'). Preposition usage is also occasionally awkward ('in a tall building'). Although these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with high frequency and cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of a Band 5 performance.
