IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The matter of whether to build high-rise buildings for living in larger cities to accommodate enough people has sparked a considerable debate. I completely agree with this statement because it can accommodate a large number of people while using urban land effectively.

First, skyscrapers can hold a lot of residents and the urban area that left behind can be used to make an amusement park for the children of the colony. For example, A person who is having a busy schedule can visit the prk with children rather than to travel a lot of distance for children recreation activities. The elderly can walk in the morning and evening. The people should take care of that park.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks of living in tall apartments as there are some privacy concerns. There is diversity among peopleas they are coming from different backgrounds. There is a chance of an increase in crime too. For example in 2016 t was reported in Kasur Pakistan that the neighbour of a girl nmed zainab rapped and murdered her.

So, ethnicity and diversity can cause serious problems in society. People living in that apartment should be ware fully of pros and cons of living around people from different backgrounds and mindsets.

However ,most of the people are acknowledged about the privacy concerns and the take the immediate and neccessory actions for it.

I complete agree to the given statement that to build high rise apartments to save urban land as the population in larger cities is increasing day by day. In some cities , alot of big families are living in two or even one small room. So tall apartments should be contructed to accommodate more prople in less area.

To sum up, I agree to given statement that skytouchings buildings should be construct to accommodate more residents. Although there are some disadvntges but if someone knows how to tackle then it is best to live in tll apartments with different ethnicities rather thn to live in seperate small houses solely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing in large cities. The main ideas, such as effective land usage and accommodating large populations, are relevant and supported throughout the essay. However, some ideas are under-developed or poorly supported. For instance, the counterargument regarding crime shifts abruptly into a highly specific and inappropriate real-world criminal case rather than discussing general sociological factors. Furthermore, the argument that remaining urban land can be converted into amusement parks for children is somewhat unrealistic. Despite these lapses in idea development and logic, a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates an overall coherent arrangement, moving from an introduction to supporting points, a counter-argument, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are very short, such as single-sentence paragraphs like 'The people should take care of that park.' Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly placed, as seen in transitions like 'First,' 'On the other hand,' and 'So.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use referring back to distant antecedents. While the structure is clear enough to follow the writer's argument, the mechanical cohesion and choppy paragraphing prevent it from reaching a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accommodate,' 'diversity,' and 'ethnicities.' However, there are numerous word choice, collocation, and spelling errors that occasionally impede communication, such as 'prk' for park, 'neccessory' for necessary, 'complete agree' instead of completely agree, and 'skytouchings' for sky-touching or skyscraper. Phrases like 'the urban area that left behind' and 'ware fully' further highlight lexical and collocational limitations. These errors demonstrate a Band 5 level of lexical resource, where noticeable inaccuracies are present throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'Although there are some disadvntges but if someone knows how to tackle then it is best to live...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, containing frequent errors in punctuation, missing articles, preposition usage, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the take the immediate', 'a lot of big families are living', 'diversity among peopleas they'). There are also awkward double conjunctions like 'Although... but'. Because the errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, particularly with run-on sentences and punctuation omissions, the grammar aligns with Band 5.
