Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that the most appropriate way to provide sufficient amount of housing in urban areas is to construct skyscrapers. In my opinion, I would partially agree with this view as it could ficilitate the accomodation issue in most of the larger cities but it could increase production cost and create concrete clusters.

Admittedly, urban migration has greatly affected the availability of homes in cities. Building of tall apartments can provide more houses in lesser space provided that more people can live in high rise establishments. To give an example, government is providing housing schemes for the people who are below poverty line, in multi-storeyed buildings.

Alternatively, creating more high-rise apartments can lead to more production cost as it require great deal of machineries and man-power. This could eventually lead to higher rents effecting the pockets of the poor. To exemplify, the newly constructed luxury apartment at abids costs 4.91 crores which is defenitely Unaffordable by a common man.

Instead of creating more and more skyscrapers in the cities the government or the construction companies can focus on using alternative methods to reduce the problem of accomodation. Likewise, the housing can be built in low-lying suburbs and the ficilities to access city can be enhanced. This will not only lead to less concrete clusters in cities but also enhances the overall infrastructure of the downtowns. One such example in Hyderabad is development of Shamshabad and the easy accesscibility of the city through various modes like PV Narsimha Rao flyover.

In conclusion, vertical buildings are a practical solution to overcome the issue of houses but this can be replaced by smart zoing and alternate methods to reduce clustering of huge establishments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a balanced, partial agreement position that is maintained throughout the essay. The writer discusses the advantages of tall buildings in addressing urban migration and housing shortages, while also acknowledging the disadvantages, such as increased production costs and the creation of concrete clusters. Main ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as government housing schemes and a specific reference to an apartment cost in Hyderabad. However, some ideas could be extended further with more detailed analysis to reach the higher band levels. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear stance and appropriate supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into a clear four-paragraph structure, consisting of an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Information and ideas flow reasonably well, and a range of cohesive devices is employed, such as "Admittedly," "Alternatively," and "In conclusion." However, some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical, and referencing is occasionally affected by minor linguistic slips. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader through the writer's argument effectively despite some minor cohesion flaws.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "urban migration," "high-rise establishments," and "alternative methods." However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including "ficilitate" (facilitate), "accomodation" (accommodation), "effecting" (affecting), "defenitely" (definitely), "zoing" (zoning), and "accesscibility" (accessibility). These errors do not impede communication, as the writer's meaning remains clear, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied syntactic structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ("as it require") and incorrect prepositional usage. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though some sentences lack necessary commas. While these errors occur with some frequency, the majority of simple sentences are accurate and the complex structures attempted do not severely impede communication.
