Student answer (Band 5.0)

constructing tall apartment blocks will help to give access to large number of homes in large cities. I partially agree with this statement, as I believe that building tall apartment blocks will help to give accommodation to enough homes, however, this essay will then discuss problem cause by overpopulation in the cities.

On the one hand, tall apartment blocks will help to give access to large number of families in the big cities. Cities are now the most chosen area for living. Everyone wants to move from rural area to urban for the sake of getting better facilities such as; educational institutes, Hospitals and transport etc. As people migtrate to cities they often face difficulty in searching for good accomodation because the rent of homes is too high. Most of the homes in urban are single story buildings so the owner wants much money for rents. To overcome this problem athorities shuold construct tall building apartments. This can be seen in China where tall buiding is constructed approximately 80 percent of resident live in large apartment in the city.

On the other hand, moving large number of imigrants into cities also can be the problem of overpopulation. when people move to cities they put pressure on job, traffic, housing and public serveces.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The student introduces a partial agreement position, stating that while they provide accommodation, overpopulation causes problems. However, the development of ideas is limited and incomplete, particularly in the second body paragraph which trails off abruptly. Furthermore, the response suffers from a significant negative impact on task completion due to length: at 212 words, it fails to meet the minimum 250-word requirement, which prevents a full discussion of the topic and caps the task response score at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organisational structure, utilizing standard introductory and transitional markers such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is disrupted by the abrupt ending of the text and underdeveloped paragraphs. Paragraphing is attempted, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Referencing and cohesive devices are minimally adequate, as seen with phrases like 'This can be seen in China where...', but the relationships between ideas are not always fully managed or clear, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, utilizing terms such as 'overpopulation', 'accommodation', 'migtrate' (migration/migrate), and 'authorities'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'migtrate' and 'athorities', as well as word choice and collocation inaccuracies such as 'give access to large number of homes' and 'want much money for rents'. These errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or concessive clauses ('as I believe that...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('problem cause by'), missing plural markers ('public serveces'), incorrect capitalization ('Hospitals'), and awkward phrasing ('tall buiding is constructed approximately 80 percent of resident live'). These frequent errors and faulty attempts at complex structures can cause difficulty for the reader, aligning with a Band 5.0 score.
