To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern epoch, living in large cities has become the most popular trend; owing to which there is lack of homes in cities. Many individuals believe that building tall apartment blocks is the most efficient way to provide enough homes in large cities. I disagree to a huge extent with the above notion. So in the forthcoming paragraphs I have supported my stand with justifications.

Taking into account the disagreement side, buying a home in apartment blocks does not give an individual the ownership of the land whereas building bunglows can give an individual the ownership of the land. As a result, in apartment blocks there is lack of home security as one does not have land ownership and the builder can get the flat evacuated as per his wish but in bunglows no one can evacuate the house without direct governmental orders or the permission of the individual owning the house.

Further more in case of natural calamities, governments compensate individuals for the loss faced by them. In bunglows individuals can get its benefit directly as the compensation is given to the land owners but in apartments builder may keep the amount with himself and not give it to the resident or owner of the flat.

Now considering the agreement side, building tall apartment blocks require less space as compared to building individual bunglows. Also they have the capacity of residing more people than that of bunglows. This helps to solve one of the major problems of cities (lack of sufficient palce to build homes). To exemplify, building a 3 BHK bunglow may require lumsum 400 sq.ft place in which hardly 10 people can reside but building a apartment block with 4 floors would require roughly 200 sq.ft land and in that easily 70 people can reside.

In conclusion, building apartment blocks can solve the problem of lack of sufficient homes to a certain extent but it has more disagreement points than its agreements ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear opposing position regarding the effectiveness of tall apartment blocks. The ideas presented, such as land ownership security and compensation issues during natural calamities, are relevant to the debate. However, some of the arguments regarding legal evacuation and compensation are unconventional or slightly underdeveloped. For instance, the claim that builders can arbitrarily evacuate flat owners overlooks standard property rights and strata title laws. Additionally, the counter-argument acknowledges space-saving benefits but relies on inaccurate mathematical estimations for room sizing. Despite these minor conceptual limitations, the overall task is addressed with a consistent position throughout, placing this response firmly at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response features a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, with each body paragraph starting with a clear transitional opening phrase such as 'Taking into account the disagreement side' and 'Now considering the agreement side'. However, referencing and cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'bunglows' and 'apartment blocks' without varied substitution. While logical progression is maintained, the transitions between sentences could be smoother to elevate the flow of ideas, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'natural calamities', 'compensation', and 'efficient'. There are, however, notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'bunglows' (bungalows), 'lumsum' (lump sum), and 'palce' (place). The vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on basic nouns and verbs related to housing. While less common lexical items are attempted, inaccuracies in spelling and collocation are present. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over multi-clause structures as seen in sentences like 'Many individuals believe that building tall apartment blocks is the most efficient way to provide enough homes in large cities.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation oversights throughout the text, such as missing articles ('building a apartment block', 'require less space') and preposition misuse ('disagreement side'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching a Band 7. The range of structures is sufficient, but accuracy requires further refinement.
