Student answer (Band 6.5)

Considering the increasing population migrating to urban areas, building high rise apartments is the best way to provide enough accomodation to all. I completely agree with the above notion. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I have supported my stand with reasonable justifications.

Tall highrise buildings are adequate to accomodate the increasing population, taking up comparatively less space and providing more housing facilities. In today's time where the migration rate is increasing rapidly, accomodating the population was noted to be a concering issue. Individual houses takes up plenty of space while housing small amount of individuals in return, whereas vertical apartment provides higher number of housing facilities while taking less ground comparatively, proving to be the best solution to tackle the rise in population. For instance, an individual house can hardly accomodate 20 people, while a tall apartment building can provide housing to thousands depending on the size.

Moreover, tall apartments can be bought in much cheeper rate comparing with individual houses. Constructing horizontal house can turn out to be really difficult. Not only will it be expensive but also create congetion in the particular area. It serves to be an impossible task especially in large fully developed cities where there is almost null number of empty grounds for building houses. Building individual houses can congest the space rapidly creating number of problems like insufficient parking area causing daily conflict between neighbours regarding space. Such challenges can be solved effectively with tall apartments providing basement parking spaces and comparatively cheeper to purchase.

Furthermore, taking up comparatively less space tall houses solves the traffic issues. Building individual houses need large space grounds, sometimes narrowing the roads which can create traffic problems. Narrowing of roads leaves very less space for transportation and considering the increasing number of vehicles in big cities, such decline in space can lead to traffic congetion around the city.

To recapitulate, building tall apartment buildings can take up small space while accomodating large number of individuals. Moreover it can also solve the issues of traffic and parking space , making it a more adequte and convinent option for accomodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student presents a clear position throughout the response, fully agreeing with the prompt and stating this intention directly in the introduction. All parts of the task are addressed, with the main body paragraphs exploring justifications such as efficient space utilisation, economic feasibility, and the mitigation of urban traffic issues. Ideas are extended and supported with general examples, such as comparing the housing capacity of a single-family house with a tall apartment block. While some arguments, such as the traffic discussion, border on over-generalisation or slight repetition, the main tenets of the prompt are successfully covered, fitting comfortably into the Band 7 profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction into housing capacity, then affordability, and finally traffic considerations before a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'whereas', and 'To recapitulate' are used to connect ideas effectively, although paragraphing could be slightly more varied. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression guides the reader naturally through the writer's arguments without causing confusion, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'urban areas', 'vertical apartment', and 'economic feasibility' (implied through cheaper rates and basement parking). However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'accomodation' (spelled with a single 'm'), 'cheeper', 'congetion', and 'null number'. These minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent the response from reaching a higher band, but the vocabulary remains adequate for the task and communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'In today's time where the migration rate is increasing rapidly...'. There is good control over punctuation, but several grammatical and mechanical errors persist. For instance, subject-verb agreement errors occur, such as 'Individual houses takes up' instead of 'take up', and articles are occasionally missed or misused, as in 'Building individual houses need large space grounds'. Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar, they rarely impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.
