Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student presents a clear position disagreeing with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes. However, the task achievement is significantly hampered by the word count failing to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words, as the response contains only 210 words. While the writer attempts to present reasons such as traffic congestion and infrastructure pressure (e.g., "essential infrastructure such as roads, public transport and water supplies can come under considerable pressure"), the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The conclusion also introduces confused phrasing that fails to adequately summarise the argument. Because the response is under-length and some ideas remain under-developed or unclear, it falls into the lower bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which shows an attempt at structural organisation. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and mechanical referencing. For instance, transitional phrases are either misused or absent, as seen in awkward transitions like 'Therefor a limited area has increasing crowd' and 'Not only this, some people can adjustment'. Paragraphing is also erratic, with some very short and disjointed paragraphs that impair the overall flow. Referencing is frequently unclear, meaning the reader struggles to follow the logical development of ideas from one sentence to the next, reflecting Band 5 characteristics where overall progression lacks clarity.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice and collocation errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples of inaccurate lexical choices include 'traffic conjunction' instead of congestion, 'price hiking lastl a few people can honking', and 'dividation is major facingisssue'. While the student attempts some less common terms like 'infrastructure' and 'amenities', these are overshadowed by severe inaccuracies and spelling errors ('dificult', 'interupted'). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts, corresponding closely to the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay, with frequent errors that regularly cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts complex structures, but these attempts are almost entirely faulty, such as 'they may not affordable modern amenities residence making it dificult to purchase' and 'which can lifestyle facing in trouble'. Simple sentences also contain basic agreement and tense errors (e.g., 'they are usually go out', 'it has several significant drawbacks'). There is a lack of error-free sentences, and punctuation errors are common. This level of grammatical accuracy and limited structural range aligns with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on positive evaluation of communicative attempts.
